Dumfriesshire / Re: Annan Old graveyard at Town Hall
« on: Tuesday 11 August 15 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm just back from a couple of days at Dumfries/Annan areas. I finally got to the graveyard at the back of the townhall, but couldn't find the headstone I was looking for. I went to the Museum too. and bought a booklet about the graveyard and according to it , the one I'm looking for hasn't been used as paving
Does anyone know if there is a plan of the lairs and who to contact?

Hi soapy1

What I can tell you about that old graveyard in Annan is during the construction of the town hall there was a sandstone retaining wall along the side of where the new building was being constructed. Crombie the builders undercut the wall and it collapsed leaving several graves to spill into the building site. This may be the reason you can't find the grave you are looking for, I know this for a fact because I worked as a labourer for them on that site when it happened.

There is a topic in Ireland Resources about ordering Northern Ireland certificates-

Thanks, no where near as easy as it is in Scotland!

Wul,
A better bet might be Arthur George Malcolm who married Florence Lilian Cottle in 1911 in St. Marks Dundela Church of Ireland, Parish of Holywood, Belfast. The fathers' names were Robert Malcolm and Frederick John Cottle.

Could you post the link to this information please?

That Florence Lily Cottle born 1884 and the Arthur George Malcolm in Kent (1911) born c1892.

Malcolm family could have been from Scotland rather than England...

Could be right, also searching for BMD's in Northern Ireland is a joke!

I assume this is the correct link?

Wul,
I tend to agree with you. Arthur's names sound very English and, like you, I can find no match to his family in Ireland. The Cottle name seems to have been in what is now the Republic of Ireland, mainly Dublin and Galway.

Regards

The Cottle family may have originated in England?

If kingskerswell did find the correct parents they were married in Belfast in 1912 so not sure what you mean by only being in Ireland because of the war.

You really need to start with a birth certificate for Robert to get names of both parents.

You are right I will wait until I get the birth certificate I have ordered and then move on from there, many thanks.

Wul- you'll need to remove the screen-shot and replace it with the link to the correct census page.
There's no way to tell if that is the correct family- Robert's birth certificate would confirm names of both parents but I'd be inclined to think kingkerswell's Arthur George Malcolm is more likely.

Sorry for my stupidity but I cannot find them in the 1911 Irish census, Kingkerswell he does not appear on the lists although Arthur George Malcolm does appear in the English 1911 census in Medway, Kent. I think the Malcolm line may only be in Ireland because of the war?
