Hi Aaron: better than that:

Go onto the Auckland Library website and search for NZMS 493 here: http://goo.gl/t4xyt you can download a pdf copy of the actual register.

I am currently working through it to transcribe it better than that already offered and have had some valuable finds.

And thank you for your further insight.

Cheers
Robert

There was a Sampson ASHTON arrived in Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand, on the Clontarf, 15 Sep 1859. He joined the Old Colonists' Association on 17 Nov 1921, at that time living in Albert Road, Northcote Point, Auckland.

He stated in his application form that he was born in Lancashire in 1828 and arrived on the Clontarf in 1857. However, the Clontarf did not come until 1859 - and he and an Alice ASHTON are shown as aged 22 & 21. This is 10 years younger than he was, or the hand-written manifest has been misread. However, assisted immigrants had to fit certain criteria and often "adjusted" minor details like age.

In the 1881 electoral roll Sampson was a labourer living in Creyke Street, Christchurch. In the 1893 and 1896 Electoral Rolls Sampson (labourer) was living with George (a cooper) at 36 Creyke Street, Christchurch. In 1911 he was a miner at the Moonlight Mine in Greymouth.

I never knew  Robert Mudge Marchant had any children, . . . .
David

David,

He spent time in New Zealand in the 1860s, amongst other things building a railway with wooden tracks - which failed after 14 months of use.

I notice from FreeBMD that he married in 1841 in Bristol, though I cannot identify the wife, nor have knowledge of where or how it ended. He was, of course, bankrupted for one of his schemes in 1851.

At some point prior to 1855 he married (perhaps?) Bonella Maria ALLMAN (nee MAHON), daughter of James MAHON of Northampton, Galway, Ireland, widow of Capt William Hutchinson ALLMAN, Surgeon, 4th (King's Own) Regiment of Foot, with whom she had three children (two survived), which MARCHANT adopted. They added his surname to their existing one, becoming Allman MARCHANT or ALLMAN-MARCHANT, depending on their whim.

About 1855 his only child Sarah Bonella MARCHANT was born. She married 1881 into a very wealthy family who are mentioned in Burke's "Colonial Gentry", John Orbell BIDWILL, producing John Carne BIDWILL (1882) and Florence Marjorie BIDWILL (1886).

Hope that helps - he was extremely hard to track down.

Am looking for information of the Spong family whose children were baptised at St peters, Woking 1825 - 1831.
Is anyone able to help please?

Sorry for the delay! Let me know how suitable the attached file is for you. It covers Henry SPONG/Elizabeth BENNETT for 3 generations. They are not all fully developed, yet, but may be useful.

Also, I have posted a couple of pages deeper in this chat a copy of the Henry DYKE / Eliza SPONG marriage registry entry for 10 Oct 1852.

Kind regards
Robert, Auckland, NZ.

For Wendyry:

My apologies for the delay: I landed in hospital the day after my last communication and forgot where I had been communicating with you.

However,

I confirm that Henry DYKE married Eliza SPONG, daughter of Henry SPONG (as attached).

Witness William WINDIATE was married to her sister Jane SPONG (1845).

Kind regards
Robert

Thank you. I'll check that out again, though it could take a bit of time.

Eliza SPONG/DYKE was declared to be 72 when she died in 1901 - giving a c.1829 birth date. The date of baptism I was given for her was 23 Aug 1829 at St Peter's, Woking.

I understand that a descendant has her death certificate naming Henry and Elizabeth as her parents, but will get back to you. Obviously, my informant may be wrong.

I have more data on descendants of Jane SPONG (Windiate-Bason) and Eliza SPONG, if wanted.
