Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Three Joseph Sandfords in Wooldale
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Joseph Sandford married Hannah Smith at All Hallows Kirkburton 25th Dec 1806- the witnesses were Samuel Sandford and John Smith
Samuel Sandford married Amelia Haigh at All Hallows Kirkburton 24th May 1830.

Yes I have wondered about a connection between Mary Haigh and Amelia's family. In sheer desperation I have collected all the Haighs I can put my hands on and I am trying to connect them.I think it would be easier to try and sort out Hannah Smith!

There was a coincidence when you wrote about relatives of David Sandford. The same day I received an email out of the blue from a descendant of Amelia and Samuel Sandford. The letter came from America and it was a copy of a letter sent in March 1927 regarding the passing of Uncle Sam ( Sandford). It was written by Clara, Aunt Mary(Sandford) youngest daughter. It goes on to say.....There is Uncle David's 3 children  (your cousins) Emily, Hannah and James Herbert. James is in the hospital suffering from cancer and might not last long in his world. It continues with an update of life in England whilst the other half of the family continue their lives in America.
How strange that you should mention about David Sandford then less than 12 hours later I should receive an email with this letter about the Sandfords-j

Thanks for the information.
David Sandford was named after Amelia Haigh Sandford's father David Haigh. I have the marriage details of Samuel and Amelia somewhere so I will find it out. Half of their family settled in the States and the other half stopped in England. Samuel Sandford settled in America but came back to Cartworth just prior to the 1871 census. His wife Amelia and his daughter Sarah travelled to the US in July of 1871 but sadly Amelia died in Kansas shortly after arriving. Her present descendants are not sure where she is buried.

Looking at the Elizabeth married to a James Hobson, there is this one in the transcriptions married at All Hallows Almondbury :-
8 Dec 1833 James Hobson to Elizabeth Taylor - both of Netherthong which most likely accounts for that Elizabeth.

...back again Holmemoss. I do have an interest in the Sandford family. As I have mentioned in a previous posting (Heward)I am interested in the Mellors and the Haighs of Holmfirth/Fulstone. Amelia Haigh (1810) married into the Sandford family and this is where my first interest started. However through research it turned out that my late cousin (descendant of the Haighs)married a descendant of the Sandford family and together, quite recently his wife and I have concentrated on finding out as much of the Sandfords as we can.The information we have on Joseph is the following:-
Joseph Sandford bapt 6th Apr 1786 at Newmill married Hannah Smith possible dau of John Smith. Witnesses were Samuel Sandford ( believe to be older brother) and John Smith. They married at Kirkburton 25 Dec 1806.The only baptisms we have are :-
Samuel Sandford  25th Apr 1807  bapt at Holmfirth Wesleyan ( married my relative Amelia Haigh)
Tedbar Sandford 10th July 1811 at Holmfirth Wesleyan

I haven't managed to trace the baptisms of the other children
John 1812
Martha 1819
Mary 1820
William 1821
Nathan 1824
Smith 1828
Ann 1830

I haven't the information at hand but I think Tedbar, or his descendant another Tedbar Sandford is buried at Lydgate chapel at Newmill- janet

Hi Holmemoss
I know where you are coming from and I am trying to do the same with my Holmfirth area names of Haigh and Mellor. In sheer desperation I have collected every surname from both the Kirkburton and Almondbury transcriptions, non conformist transcription of the area, the Hearth Tax, anything I can lay my hands on. Your surname of Heward I would think might be a bit easier to sort out. I wouldn't normally advocate starting at the earliest and moving forward but it might be one way of trying to connect your family.
Looking at the Hearth Tax of 1672 there is a James 'Howard' in the Holmfirth area which could be a variation on the name. Good luck with your search. -j

I don't normally jump the gun by looking at a century earlier but there are baptisms for
Johes(john) Heward baptised 8th Feb 1718  son of Jacobi (James) of Holmewood
Then a Martha Heyward baptised 14 May 1709 dau of Jacobi (James) of Holnewood
Sara baptised 27thSep 1712 dau of Johnis (John) of Holne

The surname variations are shown together with the sometimes used 'Holne' which I believe was the actual name/spelling of Holme- don't know whether this helps or not.

Having now found the baptisms of Benjamin and William with the mothers maiden name it appears that either John's first wife died or that John's father is still alive living at the same abode. My reasoning is that John is entered as (jnr)on Benjamin's baptism  suggesting that his father is still alive.
Hannah Sykes is baptised 28/09/1790 dau of John of Tunicliffe Hill at Almondbury

Have checked baptisms at the Lane Independent 1779-1916 and there are no children of John Sykes with a Mary

Regarding the marriage of John Sykes in Almondbury
There are two marriages of a John Sykes to a Mary, the first being John Sykes to Mary Mallinson on the 5/09/1785.Their son is a baptised David Sykes son of John Sykes of Tunicliffe Hill 19th May 1787. Four years before John Sykes marries  Mary Crawshaw, their wedding took place on 1st Dec 1791. Did his first wife die or are there two separate couples. If there are, then it is the first couple who live at Tunnicliffe
