This sounds very promising. Do you have more details about James Drummond? I have no further information than what was mentioned in my earlier post. It would be nice to have the names of Mary's siblings. Do you know if 'your' Janet Drummond arrived as a passenger or a convict? And on what ship? How do I find this out otherwise?

I would really like some further information about this family. My great-grandparents were Mary (Beatrice?) Bruce Drummond (1858-1927) and John Reed (1856-1924). Both were born (if my information is correct) in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, and I have no guarantee that the birth-dates are correct. Their daughter Mabel Alice Gay nee Reed (1883-1956) was my grandmother.

I have been unable to get information about Mary's parents, but it has been suggested that she may be the daughter of James Drummond and Janet Cairns. The reference above mentions a Janet Cairns who (at a pinch) just MIGHT be Mary's mother - and it's tantalising to note that one of Janet's siblings is a James Drummond Cairns.

I think it is very likely that Mary's parents were born in Scotland.

I'd appreciate your help!

I have Walter Gay (1805-1885) from Bonhill married to Flora Glen (1805-1843) from Alexandria.

It is possible that Flora's parents were Walter Glen and Jean Allen.

Walter's parents were Walter Gay (b. c. 1778) at Bonhill; and Catherine McFarlane (b. c. 1777).  I it possible that Walter's parents were Walter Gay (b. c. 1760 in Cardross and Janet ?.

Walter (1805-1885) and Flora had children:

Walter Gay (1832-1873) married Isabella Ross (b. 1834)
John Gay, b. 1833
James Gay (b. 1837-1881) married Emma Savage (1841-1918). Both died in Australia.
Alexander Gay, b. 1841.

Any information about any of these people, and their ancestors and descendants, would be greatly appreciated.

This is all fantastic stuff! Thank you! Keep it coming.

Anything more on 'Margaret'?
 <<St Leonard Shoreditch
1800 Nov 2, William, s/o William & Margaret SAVAGE, Cravens Buildings, born Sep 29>>

There had been family rumours that Jasper Selwyn was a solicitor, and this all confims it, but people have constantly kept confusing him with the famous Charles Jasper Selwyn - and we knew that he was NOT immediately connected to our lot (though perhaps distantly). So finding OUR Jasper's family has been another of those dreaded brick walls.

Seems like we have the right people - and are on the right track.

The marriage date fits nicely - I had the same year, 1825.

I've got William Savage d. 14th Nov 1851, buried at Muirhead Cemetery. Perhaps he died on 14th, was buried on 22nd. Cemetery details need checking, too. How do I go about this?

Thanks!

Um... any more info?

I am looking for all and any information about the ancestors of Emma Savage (b. 1840 in Surrey Street, Middlesex, London, England, d. 1918 in Victoria, Australia).

Emma was the daughter of William Savage (1800-1851) and Martha Selwyn (1801-1840).

William Savage's parents were:
William Savage (1772-1821) and possibly Margaret Smallwood (1774-1814).

Martha Selwyn's parents were (possibly) Jasper Selwyn (b. 1780) and Mary.

Can anybody help, please?

Dunbartonshire / Gay, McFarlane, Glen, Savage families
« on: Sunday 21 November 10 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about the Gay, McFarlane and Glen families, from Bonhill or thereabouts in Dunbartonshire.

I have the following information:

Walter Gay (1805-1885) married Flora Glen (1801-1843) in 1832.

Walter's parents were:
Walter (b. 1778) and Catherine McFarlane (b. 1777)

Flora's parents were:
Walter Glen and Jean Allan/Allen

Walter Gay and Flora Glen had children:

Walter (b. 1832) m. Isabella Ross (b. 1834)
John (b. 1833)
James (1837-1881) m. Emma Savage (1840-1918)
Alexander (b. 1841)

James Gay and Emma Savage (who was born in London) emigrated to Australia where they met and married.

We think Emma's parents were Jasper Savage and Mary. Dates unknown.

Any further information would be gratefully received!
