Europe / Looking for info about the English Schleswig-Holstein stationmaster
« on: Monday 30 October 17 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Once again I have to throw myself on the mercy of this forum. I can’t really move forward in my objective of telling the story of stationmaster, John S Louth, without the ability to read Danish. I have managed to proceed thus far with contemporary British newspaper reports, but they’re now dwindling.

I did post back in September asking for an image of John. I was given one, by the very helpful ‘Jamcat95’ (Ian). Thing is the document Ian sent me was about his directorship of the Jysk-Fyenske Jernbaner. This, I knew nothing about. What I do know:

1)   He went from Norfolk to Flensburg in 1854 to run the Danish ‘Royal Schleswig-Holstein Railway’ which was built by the English company of ‘Peto, Brassey, and Betts.
2)   He was awarded the honour ‘Knight of Dennibroge’ by the King of Denmark in 1857.
3)   In 1866, Schleswig-Holstein became part of the Prussian empire.
4)   In 1870 a testemonial dinner is given for him at Flensburg. He is given sculpture worth 1500 Marks. He then presumably comes back to England.

According to the JFJ wiki page he was director of this railway 1862-1868. Does that mean he administered it from Germany for 2 years? Did he live anywere other than Flensburg?

If any Danish or German railway enthusiast could give me any additional info. I’d be extremely grateful.

Ian, thank you so much.

I had thought this was a long shot, and that I probably wouldn't hear from anybody: so this is great.

Are you a Danish speaker?

Now, if I understand properly, J.S.Louth was originally employed to run the Schleswig Holstein Railway, but moved on to manage another Danish railway when SH became part of Prussia.

This is news to me. I thought he returned to England when the Prussians took over.

I am looking for an image of the Englishman J.S.Louth who was stationmaster at Flensburg when the railway was commissioned by Frederick VII of Denmark.

Can anybody help?

The Common Room / Clerks of the Peace

Hi,
I am studying the early days of the L&SWR.

In a railway bill I found online, it says that maps and plans were lodged with the Clerk of the Peace in the county of Southampton.

Where are these now?

Cheers              Dan

Oooo, thank you everybody.

Certainly looks like my man. Must say though, I thought he was Canadian.

He likes that style of hat.
