Caithness / Re: Wick Newspapers/Resources?
« on: Monday 26 November 07 13:18 GMT (UK)  »
HI thanks for the responses.

No, none of the family remained in Wick at all after the 1950's - they all moved down south to the Watford area.

Basically they moved up from Blyth to start the business supporting the steam trawlers chasing the herrings. When the steam trawlers finished they moved away from the area.

I suppose I might be looking for old newspapers with adverts in or something?

Caithness / Wick Newspapers/Resources?
« on: Wednesday 21 November 07 06:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone !

My hubby's grandad was a coal merchant and shipbroker in Wick with branches at Blyth and Yarmouth around 1926 - 1952. His name was Alexander Pate (& Co.) and the family lived at 3 West Banks Terrace, Wick.

He died before my hubby was born, and following a family bereavement we have come across some old paperwork and would love to know more, or where we can find out about the business.

We are in Northamptonshire, so no exactly handy for Wick library!

Any kindly soul advise how/where we can find out more?

Im willing to do English look ups or anything else in return, have many years experience with family trees, but know very little about Scottish resources really.

Many thanks

Andrae

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Rippingale and Finch (Gestingthorpe/Bocking)

Hmmm I know what you mean, that Rinch one on the 1881 census. I think theyre the Ilford Rippingales..............

I cant understand why I cant find James Rippingales birth in Gestingthorpe in 1825. Neither can I find Thomas Rippingale or Finch in 1853 ish in Halstead, but some of the images from those years are illegible on the birth indexes.

I do have  a slight connection with Joseph Finch marrying Frances Rippingale in Gestingthorpe 8.3.1801, with a son Joseph Finch born 1802. Im wondering whether James Finch Rippingale born 1825 maybe somehow related to this lot.

Maybe they all fell out and he dropped the Rippingale somewhere along the line. Thats mighty inconsiderate of them considering Im doing this research!

Thanks for your interest

Hi Tazzie

Thanks for that. Yes its a complicated one. Grrr.

1881 Church Street Bocking - King William

James Finch 56 beerseller & baker   b Gestingthorpe
Mary Ann (poss Kemp) 57                 b Bocking
Arthur    21     Bocking
Harry      20         "
Elizabeth 18    silk locker Bocking
Albert  16 Bakers Asst    Bocking

living next door, his son and family Thomas Finch 28 b Halstead. This Thomas 'reverted' back to using Rippingale on 1891. I know this from the age of Thomas's children, Harry, Kate and Florence on 1881 and 1891 census for Church Street Bocking.

1871 James Finch  same as above with inclusion of Thomas in the children.

1861 same but at the Royal Oak Bocking with older children

1851 poss James Finch Mount Pleasant Bocking, Margaret wife and Sarah dau

I know what you mean about two James possibly being the same person. I cant imagine for the life of me that any man would be keeping two families on the go under two different names with a total of around 15 children!

ho hum

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Rippingale and Finch (Gestingthorpe/Bocking)

Hi everyone again (im down as a pioneer but I have ignored you for ages -sorry!)

Am stuck with a James Rippingale born 1825ish in Gestingthorpe. He moved to Bocking and ran a pub there (according to the census's) but was calling himself Finch. His children were recorded as Finch on every census but births were registered as Rippingale.

I have a death 1909 for a James Finch Rippingale Reg District Braintree age 83. Looks likely suspect, so Ive sent for his death cert. BUT I cannot find any parish mention on the IGI anywhere near his birth in 1825, not for Rippingale or Finch.

Is there anyone who could help me out with his birth? Id love to know his parentage.

Many thanks.

Pinky
