South Africa / Re: Are there any census info in South Africa??
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Pampoen,
The SA came about because of the name Silva da Shepstone given to my maternal grandmother's first child. In Italian 'da' means 'from' as in Leonardo da Vinci (from the village of Vinci). We couldn't find any relatives with that name in the UK and the only place called Shepstone is in South Africa. At least that was our starting point.
Thank you for the alternative suggestion though as South Africa turned out to be a red herring!!

World War One / Re: Royal Bucks Hussars Machine Gun Corps

I have just picked up on this discussion and would like to tell June that my grandfather was also in the Royal Bucks Hussars Machine Gun Core. His name was William George Sear and after his intial training he was also sent to Egypt and then to France. Although I have his military record I don't have any photographs...are there any kept by anyone, anywhere?

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Adoptions 1940s
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi Marlene, my family and I have just received copies of my mother's adoption papers dating back to 1929.  General Registry can give you the name of the court who dealt with your relative's case and you can apply to them. But, if, as in our case, the papers could not be found, you may have more success going through a post adoption team. They liase with social services in the area where your relative was adopted. Once you have located them they will arrange for you to have an interview. You need to take with you your relative's birth/adoption certificate and any other information you have managed to gleen.  Hope this is helpful.Good luck. Maggimot

Europe / schoeps/shepstone

I am trying to trace relatives of Max Silvia Schoeps born in 1855 in Kobylin former East Prussia. I think that his father's name was Adolph Schoeps and his mother was Sophie (probably nee Silvia) Max was a mining engineer who worked for the National Geographical Soceity. His work took him frequently to Accra Ghana. He emigrated to the UK sometime before 1892 when he married in London. If anyone has any links to this family or knows where I might search then I would be love to hear from you.

South Africa / looking for Silva
« on: Wednesday 29 December 10 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone, yesterday I did my first post but see that I put it in another (wrong)discussion...der... I'm just a novice!! I am trying to trace a family by the name of Silva. This is what I know...Reginald Eric Silva married my grandmother, Lillian Mary Crump in St Pancras London in 1918. His profession electrical engineer. Present was his father Max Silva a mechanical engineer. In 1919 a son is born and registered as Melville Eric Silva de Shepstone. Since then none of the males can be found in the UK although my grandmother remained in London and gave her name as Shepstone. Is there a link to SA...if anyone has any info I would be very grateful. Thank you.

PS there are some references to Silva's on NAAIRS and one JMB Silva joined the mounted police in Natal in 1899 but nothing concrete to link up.

I am searching for a family named Silva and wonder if anyone can help me locate them. In 1918 Reginald Eric Silva married my grandmother in St Pancras London. Max Silva (the father) attended the wedding and was residing at 175 Park Avenue. In 1919 a child - Melville Eric Silva de Shepstone- was born. Since then none of the male members of this group can be located in the UK. I don't know if there is a link with SA but Silva de Shepstone suggests there may be.
