Durham / Re: Blimey, think ancestor was charged with incest !
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 20:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, thanks all very much for your replies. I noticed when scrolling through the records that there were other such cases in the Durham records, but in addition to "correction for incest", it also said " marriage annulled". There was no mention of a marriage in the Andrew Burnett case. The family were Scottish Presbyterians, so non-conformists, and I'm wondering if he had married a relative, but not in an Anglican church, and therefore wasn't married in the eyes of the law. I'll look in to the bankruptcy records, may thanks for that link.
Does anyone know if it's possible to order a transcript from the uni, and if so how I go about it, sorry I'm totally new to this.

Thanks once again, Emma.

Durham / Blimey, think ancestor was charged with incest !
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I'm researching the Burnett family in the Bishopwearmouth area, and have managed to get back to 1718 and the birth of Robert Burnett. I have found reference to a "Correction For Incest" in the Uni records relating to an Andrew Burnett in 1738. My Robert's first born son was named Andrew, as was, I suspect his father, so it's a family name. I've also found a record of a burial, simply listed as "Burnet, wife of Andrew, insolvent" in 1742.
Could anyone advise me as to how I gain access to the Durham Uni records, and also if insolvent would be the same as bankrupt, and if so point me in the direction of any relevant records.

Many thanks in advance, Emma.

Aberdeenshire / Robert Burnett, Andrew Burnett
« on: Monday 07 February 11 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all, have been researching family tree. Family story goes that we originate from Aberdeenshire, but so far have only traced family members in Durham/Sunderland. Seem to have hit a wall now, as I have record of Roberts death and age in Durham, but no baptism. He was born around 1718, married a Jane Hewitt and his first born was named Andrew. Wondering if he may have been born in Scotland, and would be really greatful for any advice or assistance, as not sure where to start. Have joined Scotlands people, can anyone recommend any other useful sites ?

Many thanks in advance, Emma.

Hi all me again, ignore my last post, got competely confused, it's been a very long week !
Thank you so much Alan, where did you find that, I've been looking all day !
It is possible that Robert was born in Ovingham, as I said they are supposed to have worked their way down from Scotland will keep him in mind, though there are a few local possibilites. He's the one I really need to confirm now. Can you recommend any sites that might help.

Thanks ever so much, best wishes, Emma.

Hi all, thanks for your replies. Sorry if I've caused any confusion by posting on 2 boards, I 'm a total newbie, and wasn't sure which was best.
I've managed to confirm Hewitts marriage, but can't find a record of his birth anywhere. Have found a marriage record of Robert Burnet and Jane Hewitt in 1762, and am thinking that they're probably his parents, as I think I have found his brother James, along with a reference in the Sunderland Echo to Roberts death, although it's reported as Hewitt, who I know was still alive and kicking.
There are so many Burnetts in the area, I'm not sure which are relations, I'm drowing in bits of paper. Is it worth contacting Durham Record Office, or is what's on-line more or less what they have word for word, or is there a better organisation ?
It's always possible that he was from Ovington, but don't think so, who knows though !

I've always been told that we originated in Scotland, then worked our way down to London, via Sunderland, but not sure when or if that's even correct. Having said that, there are no Burnetts recorded in Bshopwearmouth in the 1500's as far as I can see.

Many thanks again, Emma.

Durham / Burnetts in Durham
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all , I'm new here, and I'm hoping that somebody has some info regarding the Burnetts of Durham. I've managed to trace us back to at least a Hewitt Burnett born in Bishopwearmouth, Durham in 1778, confirmed by 1841 cenus and parish records, etc. Think I've found his father, Robert, wife Jane Hewitt, as have found marriage record, along with lots of siblings. Seem to have hit a wall now, as have found no record of Roberts baptism, and can't seem to link any siblings. They were non-conformists, mainly attended the Spring Garden Lane Chapel. have hit a brick wall now, trying to find Roberts parents, and wondering if anyone might have any advice or info that could help.

Many thanks, Emma.

PS Have some 18th and 19th Century documents, a couple of wills, etc, including those of the Sommervilles, Gledhills and Berries, who all married Burnetts, if there contents are of interest to anyone.

Hi there, wow you lot are quick, thanks very much. Have already confirmed Hewitt's details, he's defintely a direct ancestor. I have managed to find a record of a marriage between a Robert Burnett and Jane Hewitt, and I'm pretty convinced they're his parents, as the names match his brother's baptism records, can't trace Hewitts. I'm now trying to go back further, but can't seem to trace anything certain, so hoping that someone has already done some research, possibly someone still local.
Have trawled through Durham records on-line, and on-line non-conformist chapel records, where I found a bulk of records, as they were members of the Spring Garden Lane Chapel for some time.
They have married Sommervilles, Gledhills and Berries over the years, and we have a few 18th and 19th Century documents, letters and wills relating to all three, plus the Burnetts, if that's of interest to anyone out there.

Best Wishes, Emma.
