Hello Norrie :

A few years ago you were really helpful in my Gordon family search.   I have just come across your story about the murder of Isabella Gordon - likely my second cousin 3x removed.  You did a great job in researching and recording this story and I have copied and added it to my record of Isabella Gordon.

I have changed from a PC to an IMac and updated my software a couple of times since I last was in contact with you so unfortunately I can't find you on any of my trees.   My 3rd great grandfather was James Harry Gordon 1787 to 1878 Buckhaven.    My grandfather was Robert Kinnear Gordon.    So I'm wondering how or if we are related ?

Sorry ... I should have told you my name is John Robert Walker.  my grandmother was Mary Walker nee Gordon.    I live on the West Coast of Canada.

Hello Norrie .   Glad to come across you again after a few years.   You were a wonderful help to me in my search for Gordon ancestors in and around Buckhaven.   I have been away from my family history search for some time but hope to get back into it again now that winter is upon us.   From this forum it looks like you have been a big help to many  people.

Best of the season to you.

Lincolnshire / Churchyard visits - question
« on: Friday 25 February 11 22:54 GMT (UK)  »
We are coming from Canada to the UK in May and I will have a day available to spend in Lincolnshire to do a bit of family history research.  My family ( Lupton, Cook, Gresham, Jubb etc ) lived in Martin, Dunston, Nocton, Timberland area  from the late 1800's and well  back into the 1700's.     I hope to visit the churchyards in each of these towns, hopefully finding ancestors gravesites.   I would like to have spent a day in Lincoln at the archives but just can't fit it in.

So my question is this - do churches have any records available ( births, marriages, deaths etc )  for the public to view ?

Lincolnshire / Re: Coming to Lincs. - Where to look ??

We'll be staying a couple of nights in a bed and breakfast in Martin only a few houses away from where my Gr. grandfather lived ln 1901 and likely further back from that.

Would " 24 Town Street " pre 1900 likely be what is now referred to as 24 High Street "   ??    I assume Town street and High Street are the same thing ?

Lincolnshire / Coming to Lincs. - Where to look ??
« on: Monday 10 January 11 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
After years of wanting to do this, we are coming from Canada in May and will be staying a couple of days in Martin to do family research.   Our family ( Lupton ) goes back into the early 1800's in Martin and earlier in Dunston.    I'm going to visit the local churchyards but I'm wondering if there are museums or town halls with early photos or archives  that would be useful.    Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Is there some good way to find out actual addresses of where our ancestors lived ?    I know that some census mention High Street or whatever mostly without actual house numbers.

Is there a local phone book online so I can lookup Luptons in the area ?  ( just curious if any are still there )

Hi Alibaker :

Thanks for this reply.  I'm not quite sure where this Edmund fits.  Have you anything more about him ?

The 1861 Dunston entry in full (MY transcription from the 1861 census book image - as good as you will get - itself a transcription, as the original census forms were destroyed):

Back Street, Dunston
Elizabeth (head) 73 Baker, Dunston
Edmund (son) 45 AgLab, Dunston
Sarah (dau-in-law) 41 Sturton by Stow
Mary (sis-in-law) 55 Charwoman, Billinghay
John (g-son) 15 Day boy on a farm, Dunston
James (g-son) 12 Scholar, Dunston
Elizabeth (g-dau) 10 Scholar, Dunston

I'm afraid that any suggestion that Edmund's Thomas was still living with his mother in 1861 is erroneous.

Geoff : I re-checked my notes on the email with the information I quoted and indeed you are correct. ! !     The person offering help previously stated that Thomas Lupton b. Oct 1812 was living with his widowed mother, married brother Edmund and family in  1851 !   Later the email read he was living with them in 1861 as I quoted you.    So " my Thomas"  b. May 1812 did not die in 1854 it was the Thomas b. Oct 1812 who was on the "Edmund" line.

I have to hand it to you, your research on this was impeccable.  You have helped me solve a puzzle and I thank you profusely !    :)

Hi Geoff :

Wow you've done great work.  Thanks again for your help.   What you sent does raise a bit of a puzzle.   Here's what I got from someone else and I think it makes sense but see what you can make of it :

"  One of the Thomas Luptons baptised in 1812 was buried in Dunston 1 Nov 1854 aged 42 yrs.    As Thomas was living with his mother, Elizabeth, widow of Edmund, in 1861, I think it would be safe to assume that it was the son of John and Elizabeth ( baptised 23 May 1812 ) who died prematurely.  "

So now there is a puzzle given you have a Thomas married to Ann still living in Martin in 1871.    Now what ? ?   ???
