Many thanks to kingskerswell and familyroutes for the record details.

It seems like a trip to Ulster is definitely required. I don't anticipate all the church records being available online anytime soon.

Better save some pennies first tho

Antrim / Help very much needed. Robert Millar Glenavy, Antrim
« on: Friday 27 May 11 14:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am completely stumped as to what to do.
My 3x great grandparents Robert Millar and Mabella Higgins were married in Glenavy RC church in 1855.
I have found Mabella on 1851 census abstracts which has given me a rough year of birth, but can find no other information.
I do not have any idea when Robert was born or died or where he came from. My grandad has told me that he is a 2nd cousin of William Millar (aka Stephen Boyd, the actor from Ben Hur) but trying to trace his family back to help with my line has also hit a wall.

I am not even sure if I have found all of their children.
Their son George married Mary Kane in Glenavy RC church in Jan 1889 and moved to Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland later that year. Their 1st child William was born there in Dec 1889.

I am unable to visit Ulster at the moment and don't know when I will be able to. This is driving me potty as Scottish records are costly but freely available.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sharon

Only thing I could find on Scotlands People in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire was between an Archibald Osborne and Christina Murray Arnott in 1949.

Any help??

Hi Tish

You may be able to help me.
I am hoping to find information on William Kane b. Antrim, Ireland 1887 d. Wellington, NZ 1955. He worked his way up the ranks to become Chief of Police in Wellington. I have no idea where to find any information about his career and have little experience with New Zealand research.

Any advice or help very much appreciated.

Ayrshire / Re: Irish families in Ayrshire

Hi Barb

The only reason I managed to find out whereabouts in Ulster that my family had come from was due to a brother who was married in 1855 in Dalry, Ayrshire. He had to declare where he was born on the marriage registration. But even then he stated that he was "born but not registered in Glenwhirry, Antrim".
I have been unable, so far to find written evidence in Antrim. The lack of census information and baptism records available online make things near impossible. A trip to Antrim is necessary but even then I'll be lucky to find anything. Hopefully a marriage for their parents will be available.
As for the OPR's in Scotland, I have found that a lot of children were not baptised. I think it all depended whether they could afford the kirk fee, especially with non-catholics.
The records I have found for Irish ancestors was via familysearch.org. Unfortunately, no Houstons to be found that I can defenitely say were my relatives.
I became an associate member of the Northern Ireland Family History Society in the hope I may get some help before I can get there myself.

Down / Re: Hillises of Katesbridge
« on: Sunday 15 May 11 08:39 BST (UK)  »
My Great Granny came from Katesbridge which I have found in records for Ballyroney, Rathfriland and Loughbrickland. But the registration district is Banbridge, Down.
I live in Scotland and I'm having problems, so I understand your predicament.
I found this site helpful to get started:
http://www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com/html/index2.htm
Theres 4 Hillis births in the Co. Down births 1865-1875 section. All male unfortunately.
The North of Ireland Family History Society should be able to help.

Hope this helps

Have you tried contacting Ayrshire Archives or the old Kirk itself? There should be burial records.

It is possible that your Irish ancestors were in fact descendants of Scots who went "ower the watter" at the plantation. I know for a fact thats what happened with a branch of my family because the surname Houston originates from Renfrewshire. Finding the evidence to prove it all is a bit of a challenge.

It disny matter whether your Scots or Irish, they're both pict/celt descendants anyway.

Im no that fussed for haggis but I find a wee dram and a pint o guiness help it go doon a treat!
