Family History Beginners Board / Mary Rogers - Janet Disher
« on: Wednesday 18 May 11 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi there. I am hoping to get in contact with anyonewho may have any information on Mary Rogers (sometimes spelt Rodgers). I do not know where Mary was born or who her parents were but she married my ggrandfater (William Francis Freer) on 8 February 1893 at Mersey, Tasmania, Australia. They had the following children:
Linda Mary Freer 1894-1898
John (Jack) Robert Freer 1897-1917, (died WW1 Dranoutre France. 4 25miles north west of Armentieres)
Daisy (May) Freer 1899-1971 (sometimes used Rogers as surname at school as she was raised by Uncle Rogers after her mothers death)
Pearl Jane Freer 1901- 1990 (my grandmother, married Alfred Woodbridge in 1925)
William (Bill) Francis Freer Jr 1903-1995 and
Mary Freer 1906-1994.

I have found some information That Mary (Rogers) Freer died on 5th August 1906 at Northdown Tasmania.

I am also trying to find information on her husbands (William) mother, Janet Disher (sometimes called Jessie). Janet arrived at Hobart Town from Greenoch Scotland aboard the John Bell on 4 Dec 1855 before continuing on to Launceston aboard the steamer Duncan Hoyle. She married Francis Freer on 6 May 1856 in Tasmania. William (Mary Rogers' husband) was their first child though unnamed male used on birth record. When Janet married Francis Freer, the priest signed her name (she used an X being unable to write) as Wishart. I assume this may be a mishearing of her Scottish accent for Disher.

I noticed on another forum one of the moderators was finding information on a Freer and managed to have some information as follows. I think this Janet (aged 3 in 1841) may be my gggrandmother as birth year is reasonably consistent with Tas archives giving her age as 19 in 1855 as passenger on John Bell. Appreciate any advice on how to confirm it is her.

I think I have found Thomas Daniel Disher's family. The family look to be Scottish and travelled to the US in 1827 on the 'Brig Tom' arriving in New York on 2 July that year, port of departure shows as Greenock, Renfrewshire. From the manifest we have - everyone born in Scotland:
William Disher 30, joiner
Dianna Disher 31
Margaret Disher 6
William Disher 3
James Disher 1

Then back in Scotland for the 1841 census we have - everyone showing as born in the county:

William Disher 45, Journeyman Joiner
Dianna Disher 40
Margaret Disher 21
William Disher 17, trunk maker
James Disher 13
James Disher 10...two James? maybe on Jane or something similar
Thomas Disher 7
Andrew Disher 5
Janet Disher 3
George Disher 1

Address: High St, Glasgow St Pauls

There is one of the children's births showing on IGI www.familysearch.org which gives mother's maiden name as SHORT (there may be more entries showing on the Old Parish Registers on Scotlands People).

MARGARET DISHER  Birth:06 MAR 1820 Glasgow
Parents: WILLIAM DISHER and DIANA SHORT

The parents' banns/marriage show on 21 AUG 1818 also in Glasgow.

Anyway thanks for reading this and would appreciate any offering on finding more on Janet Disher and/or Mary Rogers and their parents or siblings.

Grant

Hi Jenn. No no maintenance other than a bit from the military pay prior to his leaving their company in 1941.  I know the name of the lady he allegedly had the child with but not the childs name etc and of course cannot get birth info after 1909 of NSW BDM. However, even though she would be in her 70's, I would feel very reluctant in case she didn't know Hugh was her father (IF he was) which I understand may well be the case......even if I could find her name. From what I recall my mother saying that lady just moved on with her new hubby and child as did Edna and I guess Hugh moved on with his life and I hope he was able to start again also, just wish I could find out where. Hi Jenn
Yes he married Edna Maria Galli in 1933 in North Sydney. They separated in 1936. Divorced in 40-41, not sure precisely. My mother had just turned 2 then.  I have the marriage certificate etc also but she is deceased now. No worries on the thinking aloud Jenn...lol...it all helps. I am about over thinking but hope here and help from people like ur good self can get me back on the track of my grandfather.
I am not sure if I can give you a link but I have more details on my Woodbridge/Fraser/Galli etc myheritage page you are welcome to view and will accept your membership no probs. It has most of the information I can find on him and his family etc.
Grant.  I am not sure if it is allowable to give a link here or all the rules yet as just joined yesterday and bein blind as a bat hard to read everything but gettin there..lol.  Anyway if so here it is    http://www.myheritage.com/site-122118781/woodbridge-fraser-galli-mcdonald-tysoe-freer-keayes-bartley
PS there was another woman he "got in trouble" though I am reluctant to give her name as my mother told me some years ago that she actually married another fellow and the child grew up thinking she was the husbands...best left alone I think so doubt he moved anywhere with her. Grant

Thats fantastic Alberta. I saw on another post that private emails were removed and an instruction was given to use a link....if that is possible please feel free to emial us through that link also might be more private if that is ok on one subject in particular.

Wow you just gave us some info of great interest, who Mary's husband was. Deb is related through her also we are fairly sure but hopefully there is a way to chat privately about that. We are new here and better read some more instructions on how that can happen unless you know?  Thanks again and yes I have no doubt you would help us greatly through your husbands mothers line. Deb and Grant.

Thanks Sue. He was discharged in absentia hence the original name after 1941. Yes I have the full record of his military file. Yes I have the next of kin records as per the enlistment paper and his sister was his next of kin as he was separated 4 years prior to enlistment.  Thanks for your reply and interest Sue. It is truly a mystery where he went. As I mentioned I have only just got in contact this year with his nephews, nieces etc as his siblings are departed. They all no nothing other than a rumour he went to Nyngan. I cannot even find another marriage for him up to the allowable date at NSW records and paid them to do a death search to last year but nothing under that name in NSW and tried NT etc also which seems to confirm my belief that he is departed and not 96 and still goin somewhere,,,,gosh that would be amazing and fantastic if he was...I wish...anyway thanks and would luv to hear back if you have any other thoughts or advice on what I can try. Grant  :)

« on: Monday 01 November 10 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate any information on my grandfather who probably changed his name after 1941. I heard he may have ended up in Nyngan or there abouts. He was born Hugh Arthur Joseph Fraser (Hughie) at St Leonards NSW on 24 December 1913. His parents were Rosetta Tysoe and Hugh (Arthur) Fraser. He had five sisters, all deceased now and I believe he is also. His sisters were named Alma (married Clifford Westbury at Tenterfield in 1917), Thelma (married Victor Deen at Sydney in 1956), Florence (married John Brown at Sydney in 1940), Alice (married James Brown at Sydney in 1938) and Jean (married Gordon Fenton at Sydney in 1940, they lived in Warren NSW). The family members I have been in touch with all heard he went missing after the 1940's though not in a missing person sense but just moved on after his divorce and parent's death and went west and probably changed his name etc after family breakup. I have his military record etc but nothing after that. Does anyone know what might have happened to him in their family research. Here is a photo of him in 1941 and also one standing from the late 20's attached in case someone recognises him though I know it is a long shot. Thanks, Just gotta keep trying...GrantW ???

Hi Ken

My better half, yes she who must be obeyed, lol, is the granddaughter of Michael Hanify, he was brought up by John and Ellen and born in Roma Qld circa 1901. Her name is Deb and grew up in Yenda NSW and she thinks you will know of her as she has a cousin Ken and perhaps u are he and either way, we would luv to get in touch with you if possible. We have checked the Hanify discussion board which has answered many of her questions. She did not know much about her grandfathers family but we do have his marriage cert to Ellen Rose Arnold from 1956. They are both deceased now as are Debs mother and father. Deb has no pics of John or Ellen or their children born in the late 1800's and we noticed you mentioned there may be some somewhere. Any information you might be able to help with about the Hanify family would be very very appreciated Ken. Anyway we are new to this site so not sure if I will get a notification email to my home email if you get a chance to respond on this discussion board but will keep checking both. Take Care, thank you and the other generous contributors to this topic for the wonderful information we have gained already due to what must have been a lot of long hours spent researching. Deb and Grant. :)
