Family History Beginners Board / Re: Two Questions
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Wow, thanks for all the replies, it has certainly given my some inspiration.  I haven't looked at my family tree for over 2 years since my nan died and I am getting the pull to jump back in.

I think I will stick to the branch that intrigues me the most, which is my maternal grandfathers branch, and see where I go from there.

Many thanks again, and I am sure I will be posting more questions on here again.

Thanks Tricia xxxx

Hi there,
I was wondering what exactly people look for when researching their family trees.  I have 2 questions which seem to be holding me back from getting really stuck in to this, basically they are.....

Do you follow one branch or flesh out all branches?

When you have a substantial amount of people on a branch do you go back and follow histories of the particular area, occupation etc, or do you just follow someone whose life piques your curiosity?

I have a lot of people on 3 branches and finding a lot of sucess going backwards, but I have a nagging doubt that perhaps this is all a bit too easy and I am doing something wrong.

I hope someone can give me a virtual prod in the right direction and set my mind at ease.

Thanks

Wow, you guys are incredible, thank you all so much.

I am going to go and print all these bits out now.  Its so exciting finding a foreign link in the family, it has opened up whole new world for me to look at.

I will order the death certificate for the 1970 death, just to make sure that I am definately on the right track.

Again thank you all very much.

Wow, thanks guys for all the quick replies.

I have spoken to my mum today, (my parents are divorced and I haven't spoken to him for about 30 years)  all she can remember is that my gm died before she met my father in 1973 and that she thinks he was a teenager when she passed away.  This would fit with the death record for 1970 as my father would have been 17 yo.

My gf lived in hayes, middx from at least the date of his marriage until his death in 1975.  So I would assume this would be where she died???

Goodness writing out this is quite tragic as it shows how little I know about a huge player in my life  :(

Hi there,

I have really hit a wall whilst looking for my paternal grandmother.  I have searched for her everywhere, and come up with so many different names and families that I am not sure where to go, so I am hoping that some fresh eyes will help me narrow it down.

All the info I have is from her marriage certificate....

Married 23/12/50
GF  William Alfred Smith  age 26
GM         Patricia J Underwood age 24

They were both living in Hayes, Middlesex at the time of the marriage.
My gf father is William Robert Smith
My gm father is Alfred Thomas Underwood.  He is deceased at the time of the marriage.

The only other information I have is that she died sometime after 1953 (as that is when my father was born).  He was an only child.  She died when he was still quite young.

I am really interested in looking for her as no one has any idea about her, and I was named after her so I feel like there is a bit of a link.

As I say I would just be grateful for some fresh eyes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

World War One / Re: overseas death certificates

Thanks for the reply. I have the right man, his name has been spelled differently all the way through  my search which has made life difficult, but I have a medal which has the reg. no.  so it has helped confirm everything.

World War One / overseas death certificates

Hello there, could anyone tell me what info I can find on an overseas death certificate.  I was wondering how my gg gf actually died as on ancestry it says died of wounds.  I am debating whether to order the certificate or save my money for certificates that are going to give me more info.  His name was Joseph pragnell, his reg. no. was s-1573. He died 23rd February 1915.  I have managed to find his grave and medal roll but no other info.   Any help would be gratefully received.
