Family History Beginners Board / Re: Sarah Rice of Armagh
« on: Monday 15 January 24 23:18 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies I previously stated that the Rice family emigrated from County Armagh to Ohio in 1826. This was an error, having discovered the 1836 Passenger List for the Lord Glenelg which arrived in New York on 18th October 1836, I now have evidence that the family arrived 10 years later. The new date, actually makes more sense regarding the ages of the Rice children when they were emigrating.

I have had a look at the Passenger List for the "Lord Glenelg", which arrived in New York on 18th October 1836.
The Rice Family onboard were as follows:
Margaret Rice    31    Principal Passenger in the family group, indicating she was a Widow.
Pat Rice            27     (Possibly Margaret's brother in law)
Michael Rice      13     (Margaret's son)
Peter  Rice          7     (Margaret's son)
Sarah Rice        12     (Margaret's daughter)
?       Rice           9?   (Margaret's daughter) this entry is almost illegible, but has been transcribed
I believe wrongly as Ju-dith? The Index card appears more ambiguous as to
the proper name, with the Ju written lightly followed by a scrawl then finishing
                                with ditt or th?
Looking at the name it could end , "it"meaning it could well have been
                                 Bridgit?
The age of 9, is also only partially legible and is open to interpretation.

Hi,
Wondering where you got the information that Sarah and Biddy e.igrated from Armagh in 1834, moving to Highland County, Ohio. From research I have done, it appears they had at least two brothers, I.e., Michael and Peter.
They appear to have had a close relationship with a Hughes family from Loughgilly Parish, County Armagh.

Hello,
I have been researching the Rice family of Highland County, Ohio who originated in south Armagh, possibly Loughgilly Parish?
Siblings, Michael, Sarah, Peter and Bridget.
I have information that their parents were a Thomas Rice and a Margaret Feenan. I also note however another contributors information concerning the Glenelg, which sailed into New York in 1836 on board which was a Rice family with similar names, except the father who was named, Patrick. I am happy to discuss further.

Hello,
I discovered earlier this year that I have a genetic connection (DNA) with several descendants of Peter Rice and Sarah Rice of Highland County, Ohio. I also have a close connection to the Rice family in my Y DNA matches.
In attempting to solve this mystery I have been researching the Rice family recently, and have added the results of this research to Family Search and Wikitree.
Basically, the Rice family, i.e., siblings, Michael, Sarah, Peter and Bridget emigrated from County Armagh presumably with their parents (presently unknown) to Highland County Ohio, in 1826, where both Sarah and Bridget (Biddie) married in 1841, Sarah to Thomas Jefferson Chalfant/Chalfont/Chaffin and Bridget to John Griffith.
The Rice family appear from the Census returns and the naming pattern of their children to have had a close relationship to a Hughes family who also moved to Highland County in 1826 (from Campbell County, Virginia). The Hughes family originated in Maytone Townland, Parish of Loughgilly (near Newry), County Armagh.
I can provide more information directly

Cork / Re: McGlennon
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 18:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

My grandad has been wanting to trace his family tree for a long time but comes up against a brick wall so I'm trying to help him out.

His mother was Mary McGlennon (possibly McGlenon) and she was born around 1897 in Cork. She had a brother called John Patrick McGlennon and their father was Joseph Patrick McGlennon. Joseph married a woman called Mary Ellen Acton.

Mary moved from Cork when she had grown up and travelled to Australia. From there she travelled to Liverpool which is where my grandad was born.

If anyone can help or think they too are related to these McGlennons, I'd really like to hear from you!

Thanks!

Hi Redfern,

The McGlennon family are not originally from County Cork but I believe they are mostly descended from James McGlennon formerly RIC who was the Superintendant of Ballincollig Gun Powder Mill in the mid 19th century.

He was married to Hester.

John McGlennon, Policeman was probably the father of John Charles and Christopher but I have his date of resignation as 16th April 1877. Here are some details:

John McGlennon, Police Constable (Born 1836)

Research into the Royal Irish Constabulary Service Index produced the following:

John McGlenon, Constable, Number 17(4?)624.
Age on Joining - 17yrs.
Height – 5’ 73/4”
Religion – Protestant
D.O.B.  - 1836
Date of Appointment –  20/9/1853
Native County – Kings County (Offaly)
Recommended by – Sub Inspector Somerville
Trade – Labourer

Service Details:   Limerick
         Cork East
1st Class Sub.Constable 1st April 1854
Acting Constable 1st March 1863
Constable 1st June 1864
Date of Resignation –  16th April 1877
Annual Pension Amount - £47

This would appear to be the police record of John (probably the son of James and Hestor McGlennon?).

Interestingly John’s county of birth is given as Kings County now Offaly although in 1836 James would have been serving in Queens County. Presumably his home was in neighbouring Kings County or perhaps this was the home of Hestors parents?

James McGlennon  (Born 1814)

The earliest member of the McGlennon family who lived in Cork that I have evidence of is James McGlennon who was a member of the Irish Constabulary. James moved to County Cork with his family around September 1843.

His service record is as follows:

James McGlennon, Constable, Number 808.
Age on Joining - 17yrs.  Height – 5’ 7”  Religion – Protestant
D.O.B.  - 1814   Date of Appointment – 1/12/1831
Native County – Queens County (Laois)
Recommended by – Rev. H. Caulfield  C.L.K.  (Prot’t Clergyman)
Trade – Farmer
County of Wife – Queens County
Service Details:   Kilkenny      0.6
         Queens Co 11.4
         Cork East   16.8      (Constable 1st June 1846)
Fined £1-0-0   28th September 1849
Date of Resignation – 1st June 1860
Annual Pension Amount - £34

James and Hester McGlennon had the following children?

1)   John born around 1836
2)   Mary born around 1840
3)   Joseph born around 1843
4)   William born around 1845
5)   James born around 1851
6)   Henry born around 1853
7)   Rebecca who married a Mr Young
8)   Another daughter who married a Mr Mack

What is your interest in the McGlennon family?

Christopher McGlennon had a brother John McGlennon who was married to Clara Lake the sister of Eleanor wife of Christopher. Clara and Eleanor's father was Robert Lake a Policeman.

Christopher and John McGlennon's father was John McGlennon a policeman (RIC).

Did Christopher and Eleanor move from Cork to Wales in the early 1900's?
