I stumbled on this post accidently and thought i would add to it  James Henry Crane was the Sergeant Major Of the Hillsborough Fort warders or Guard a private Army of 20 men under the command of Lord Downshire Constable of Hillsboroguh Fort.  In both the 1910 and 1911 Census he would appear to be separated from his family as he is living in separate Addresses in both census. pictures of him are online here-

he is the elderly warder with silk sash and epaulettes.
