Europe / Re: Finnish Birth Records
« on: Saturday 17 August 19 21:21 BST (UK)  »
Sorry for being late in my replies..Had unexpectedly busy two days!

Thanks Jamcat. I had come across that forum before but it was so long since I looked at Finnish records. I was able to get a few links to other useful sites.

Tree spirit Thanks for offering but I had  looked at that site before and the person I'm looking for definitely isn't on it.

I guess I was looking for an update as to how things are in Finland with regard to further records being available online. Apologies I should have been more specific in my opening post.

Thanks to Jamcat posting a  link to the Finlander forum I have a few more sites to visit . I will report back!

Europe / Finnish Birth Records

Is anybody here familiar with the Finnish  Records and updates.

My reason for asking is that I'm looking for a person born 1908 and who is not living. I know there is a 100 year privacy rule in place regarding what information can be viewed online. But was wondering as the years go on if more and more records are able to be viewed? Because the 100 year rule has lapsed.

Many thanks

With regard to records before 1730, I think its because they are either just not available from that time or else the archives service just hasn't go around to digitizing them for online  use.  I cant go beyond that period in time either, and you are lucky that there are a lot more records for Nykarleby.   I still have some gaps to fill, hence I am always looking to see if the Archives  are updated.

Have you looked at the Finnish National Archives service??  there are some records for some villages in the parish  from 1728 the Communion books. Writing is very old fashioned on images, but you may find some more information. If I find any other resources for the parish I will log in and  let you know.  My internet is woeful slow at the minute, but if it improves I can have a look at the 1728 books if you need help...

Cheers

Hi there

I found the Hiski website a  good place to start, however,  be aware it is far from being a complete resource, it still requires many updates and is mainly done by volunteers, you may or may not find all the parishes and also your ancestor records. There  arent many records either post 1900 ( due to strict data protection in Finland,  but I think this is under review, or is about to be amended)

the national archives service can be frustrating(Digi.narc)  and requires a bit of navigation and some Swedish or finnish skills at times. You have to wade through a lot of images once you find the parish you are searching in.

also try this crowd: The Finnish Family History Soc

http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm

A nicer place to look in my opinion,  and even a  members forum ( you can guest post)  and they are  quite helpful with questions and queries.

May I ask which areas in Finland you are interested in?  Just that there is also the Karelian Records database, if you think your ancestors came from  that part of Karelia ( near East border)  which  is now part of Russia. Some good complete records also .

Hope the above helps!

Limerick / Re: Adams/Keane/Stein of Limerick

Hi

Have you looked at the  Registers of Electors at Limerick City Library? A quick look for the 1885 register listed a John Adams  ( I know names slightly different) at Emmet place in Limerick. There are other registers for other years and also a link to the Limerick Archives for other registers.

Find them at:http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/RegistersofElectors/

I found these registers  extremely helpful  and  gained a lot of new leads

best of luck

Ireland / Re: A problem: Bridget & Margaret interchangable?
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 12:37 GMT (UK)  »

With regard to Judith and Julia, is it possible that Judith is the formal name for  Julia ?  I have someone in my family who was always known as Julia but on her childrens baptism records she is down as Judith - on most of the records bar two, where Julia was recorded.  As the lady in question had quite  a lot of children,  I have to search for records under Julia and Judith, and I am also finding a lot of mis - spellings of surnames too!

I came to the conclusion, that the priest put down the mothers formal birth name,  for his parish records despite what she might have been known in everyday life.

Interesting question. I too have pondered about this. Do you think Margaret would have been a pet name if the child had Bridget as a first name the same as the mother?  Have seen many Bridgets also recorded as Delia, as the mother and daughter had same first name Bridget,  so the daughter was known as Delia.

I'm having a problem with Judith and Julia.  Can anyone tell me if these were interchangeable in Ireland say the period of 1840 to 1870?

Hi there

having looked at your  other posts on Henry Lagerstrom,  Henry would be Henrik if he came from Finland, and second name Wilhelm, hence you are looking for Henrik Wilhelm Lagerstrom? I assume  working out the dates Henry or Henrik was  born 1841. Do you have any idea of a parish or even vague placename in Finland? did he marry after he came to Australia.

You said that he was a Russian Finn - just wondering how you found this out?  If there is anything else you can provide,  please do post. The Finnish Hiski Church records might show something.

Regarding the  other chap, I thought it might have been liljqvist or lidqvist at first but I see the t is most definately crossed so I'll have to look again to see what it might be. Its a qvist anyway. Perhaps others might be able to decipher it better.

Hi Capt Jock

will reply to your PM, I just made up the name Diggie as i am digging up ancestral roots!

I was keen to read the thread you posted about Railway Records in Northern Ireland and thankyou for sharing the information and also the PRONI records.

I take it that I can ask to see the archives you mentioned  e.g the employment records for the railways, without any issues if I went up to PRONI?

potentially this throws up new research options.

thanks!
