Essex Lookup Requests / Re: St Andrew Sth Shoebury & St Mary Prittlewell - VAUN
« on: Wednesday 20 October 10 09:06 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I'm trying to locate the baptism of 3 children and the burial of 2 of those.
1885 Joseph Cephas VAUN, Shoeburyness, dec'd 1887
1887 Eliza Amelia VAUN, Prittlewell
1889 Albert Henry VAUN, Prittlewell, dec'd 1889.
Further down I have listed the GRO details I have on these children.

I usually borrow films from my local LDS.  I intend to borrow some for Southend, one for Nth Shoebury Bps 1813-1949 but the following are not available to me. :-\

St Mary the Virgin, Prittlewell baptisms 1880-1893 [ERO D/P 183/1/48 microfiche].  Can't seem to find burials for 1889?
St Andrew, South Shoebury baptisms 1865-1892 [ERO D/P 282/1/4 microfiche]
St Andrew, Sth Shoebury burials 1878-1915 [ERO D/P 282/1/7 microfiche]
St Mary the Virgin, Nth Shoebury burials 1813 - 1892 [ERO D/P 216/1/14 microfiche]

I found the above ERO microfiche via SEAX and assuming I have not blundered the images don't seem to be yet available.

If someone is able to find time to have a look for me it would be most appreciated.  I'm not confident that the children are present in the listed Shoebury & Prittlewell registers but if they are it will save me ordering the Southend films - usually a 4-6 week turnaround.  I've no idea how busy these CofE Churches were but if they were quite busy then I understand your refusal to do look ups for me.

There is some variation in the spelling of the surname VAUN.  Father Joseph was born in France and could write legibly, but his English wife who registered the birth of the children could not write and some birth registrations have a surname phonetically similar to Vaun.  Alternatively, sometimes the handwriting of the clerk may be at fault and the u may look like n, resulting in VANN.  The informant for the death of Albert Henry was his father and the surname is definitely VAUN on the death certificate.

This is the information I have obtained from GRO certificates & Census (besides Amy Ellen, no baptism info held on the children) -

1880 St Mary’s Teynham Kent – marriage Joseph VAUN, bachelor & widow, Catherine Ann Gilham, both of Teynham.  (Bride born in 1850 at Sittingbourne, Kent).

Known children of Joseph & Catherine Ann VAUN -

1881 Aug 11 Amy Ellen VAWN born Teynham Kent & baptized on 4 Sep 1881 Amy Helen VAUN (IGI) at Teynham, father a brickfields labourer (Amy lived to adulthood and used the surname of VAUN until her marriage).

1882/1883 – unknown.  If a child was born could be at Teynham Kent and buried there or at Shoebury or possibly born & died in Shoeburyness??

1885 Feb 3 Joseph Cephas VAUGHAN born at Shoeburyness, father a brick maker, birth registered 9 March 1885 at Great Wakering subdistrict – district of Rochford.
1887 Joseph Cephus VANN dec’d March Qtr Rochford 4a 229

1887 May 10 Eliza Amelia VAUN born 7 Cross or Crow Horse? Cottages Prittlewell, father a brick maker, birth registered 20 June 1887 at Prittlewell subdistrict – district of Rochford.

1889 Dec Qtr Rochford 4a 450 Albert Henry VAUGHAN born.
1889 Nov 18 Albert Henry VAUN died 7 Hamlet Cottages Prittlewell, father general labourer, registered 18 November 1889 at Prittlewell subdistrict – district of Rochford.

A female sibling of Amy Ellen & George Frederick VAUN lived to adulthood but unknown whether it was Eliza or an unidentified child.

1891 Census – 24 Hardwicke St Barking ESS (RG12/1372 f.79 pg13)
VAUN Joseph, brick labourer, b. France
VAUN Caroline [Catherine], b. Sittingbourne Kent
VAUN Amy, b. Teynham Kent
VAUN Eliza, b. Southend Essex.

1896 May 28 George Frederick VAUGHAN born at William St., West Thurrock, father general labourer, birth registered 3 July 1896 at Grays subdistrict – district of Orsett (George, my grandfather, lived to adulthood and used the surname of VAUN).

1901 Census – Willow Walk Ilford ESS (RG13/1648 f19 pg30)
VAUN Joseph, bricklayer’s labourer, b. France
VAUN Catherine A, b. Sittingbourne Kent
VAUN Eliza b. Southend Essex
VAUN George, b. West Thurrock Essex

Father, Joseph VAUN, born in France in the 1881 English Census but unable to find him in an earlier English census.  He was married in a CofE Church, eldest child baptized in a CofE Church and Joseph was buried in a CofE Church.  I intend to borrow a film of baptisms for Teynham Kent to see whether he may have been baptized just prior to his marriage in 1880.

Besides being interested in the baptism/burial of the children, I'm curious see whether any entry might provide a vague clue about their father, Joseph Vaun.  I haven't been able to make any progress with him for a few years.

Any suggestions welcomed. :)

If I'm on the wrong track - please tell me.

best wishes,

Hi,

Not sure if your still searching? I have been looking for my family from Foulness, Great Wakering.

There is also a St Mary the Virgin on Foulness Island just east of Wakering. I am off there at the weekend to take pictures of gravestones etc. Also Yesterday whilst I was at the Libary (Southend) I found all the baptisims from 1800 to 1926.

Drop me an email if you would like some help etc.
