Sorry if I gave the impression I was ignoring Margaret born in Dreghorn, I intend to follow up Ritchie, Janet & Margaret through Scotlandspeople, and try to see if they are possibly the ones in St Quivox.
It was very kind of you to send the excerpt for me.

I do find it odd that Richard is called Ritchie in that entry as the St Q Richard and all his descendents of that name [5] used the full Richard at all times, but that doesn't mean it is not the same man.

I will also definitely check out the MIs re St Quivox, thanks for that link too.

However I am rather snowed under just now so it will be a few days before I will have time enough to do so.

I appreciate the interest and trouble you are taking to help. :)

Cheers
T

Hi Gadget
Thanks for the suggestions. I will follow them up.

Still hope someone knows about the deaths/ grave/s, as may have better information on them.

Am hoping eldest son Richard of Mauchline, Merchant & Inn Keeper would have erected one. It is probably in St Quivox, as they seems to have spent their married life there.

The children I know of from Richard and Janet were all born in St Quivox and are

Richard     Born 5/09/1798      Bap. 6/09/1798

David        Born 25/05/1802    Bap. 30/05/1802

Janet         Born 26/01/1807    Bap 27/01/1807     Rather a gap there!

Margaret    Born 22/11/1808    Bap 25/11/1808

John          Born 26/03/1811     Bap 28/03/1811

William      Born 30/09/1815     Bap  2/10/1815

Cheers    T

Scotland / Richard Gibson & Janet Gillies in St Quivox, Ayrshire 1796 - ??
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 05:09 GMT (UK)  »
Richard Gibson [labourer on son's death cert] married Janet Gillies on 8 Nov 1796. They had six children in St Quivox, most well documented. The youngest was born in 1815.

Could anyone help with the following, please:

    Richard Gibson
1. Date and place of  birth.  [ Probably in 1770s]
2. Name/s of his parents.
3. Date and place of death.  [ Probably before 1841, can't find him in the census ]
4. Does he have a gravestone.

    Janet Gibson, m s Gillies.
Same list for her as for Richard.

Here's hoping !  :)

Ayrshire / Poosie Nansie & Black Geordie Gibson of Mauchline 1745 - 1798
« on: Tuesday 12 March 13 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Poosie Nansie [Agnes Ronald] & Black Geordie Gibson of Burns poem "The Jolly Beggars" had three children. Eldest was William, baptized 1746 in Mauchline, then Janet [Racer Jess/the hav'rel Jenny] baptized 1748 in Sorn, and 'Unnamed son' [John/Jockie] baptized 1751 in Mauchline who took over Poosie Nansie's Inn in 1788. They may have had another son, George, baptized 1755 in Mauchline.

Does anyone have any information on what happened to William, please ?

His father Geordie was 'taylor of Mauchline' by trade before the boardinghouse/Inn was started in 1784.

Thanks for any help.

Hi - Think the first two letters may be Gr ( Great or Greater). Next definitely  starts with T - I make it Ti r n lamp, p in copperplate is usually open with a flick on the tail. agree it was probably a phonetic rendering of a local accent.
 hope you find it. T

Do try and find other user's comments about free programs before going too far. We got badly caught with one - very easy to use - lots of matches etc, but NO security.
Cost us lots of $$$ to get the laptop cleaned up!  98 viruses and bugs had screwed everything up despite firewalls etc. When the feedback site was checked - after - there were bad comments!
Don't know if I can name the dud on here. We bought Family Tree Maker         ( Ancestry.com ) which is Ok - also hear good reports of Legacy from a very experienced user.
Good luck.  T

The Common Room / Re: What Country is your research ?

Have been busy sorting all the Australian ones, they mostly arrived between 1830 and 1860, so could go a fair way back before I needed to search in the UK.

 Deeply unfashionable! No convicts!!

Gentlemen settlers, teachers, miners, Tanner/furrier ( hope he liked roo skins ), and a very canny Scot who was a Commission Agent on his marriage certificate, and a ( very wealthy) Stock and Station Agent on his death one. Died at 55 though.

Just starting in the UK and mostly will want info before 1837 so probably need a lot of help.  This site is all so interesting and friendly. T.

Family History Beginners Board / Hall Mayor Bramwell family
« on: Monday 18 October 10 06:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Last night on IGI FamilySearch in the Ancestral File I found quite an extensive tree for Joseph Mayor Hall and wife Elizabeth ( Bramwell ). The UK data before 1800 was sketchy and not validated but at least a pointer, the Australian data accuracy was variable.
Hope this may be of interest to others of those names. Feedback on the UK parts would be great. T  :)

Yes, I've already hit that problem on the paternal side with Cheer/Chear/Cheir on three different certificates!
At least her husband was consistently Sweetman.
Just about sorted the Australian records for all the branches, though can't find some emigration dates/ships as surnames like Roberts, Davies, Hall and Gibson are difficult to identify among the many, also some came before the dates when the online lists start. T  :(   but hey why not :) !
