Thank you all for this wonderful help.

One question I have; what does it mean he was an agent? And does anyone know what the degema African administration in London is? I've googled it but can find nothing.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for help finding the parents of Herbert Hoyland born 1879 in Sheffield and died 1946. I have his father as a Thomas Housley Hoyland born 1839 Sheffield and his mother as a Sarah born around 1840 in Derbyshire. If anyone can help me find more out about his mother I'd much appreciate it.

Thank you all

Travelling People / Re: Ellen Stockton 1851 Census
« on: Wednesday 30 October 13 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
It does!

Her Husband's dad (Robert Williams born 1794), is listed as a 'bindlestaff' and also a 'wire worker'. He also is listed as living in a travelling caravan in Dallam. I am unsure what a bindlestaff is, but I've read working with metals was a gypsy occupation.

Where travelling caravans part of the gypsy community or separate to it?

Travelling People / Ellen Stockton 1851 Census
« on: Wednesday 30 October 13 17:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have found on a census from 1851 an Ellen Stockton who is registered as being part of a 'travelling caravan' in Dallam Warrington.

I don't actually know what this means! Was she a traveler or part of a circus?

Edit: Her husband Robert Williams (born 1816) is listed as being a 'showman'. What in actuality does this mean?

Any help would be appreciated.

Norfolk / Robert Harmer 1769 Norfolk
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 12:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'd greatly appreciate any help with confirming the parents of Robert Harmer born 1769 in Norfolk. I believe his parents to be a Robert Harmer Junior and a Millah (this is what I've found on IGI). I am stuck at this however, and cannot find anything further. The name Millah is unusual and I am not sure if it is a diminutive of Amelia?

Robert Harmer born 1769 married Rebecca Fisher born 1770 if this helps.

Sorry if the information is scant, please do tell me if you would require any further information to help.

Thank you!

Other Countries / Help Tracing Indian Ancestors
« on: Thursday 22 August 13 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall and was wondering if anyone could help.

My family have roots in India from around 1770 up until the mid 1800's. I have managed to trace the family tree back to around 1790 but have become stuck.

I am stuck on a Nicholas Smith (born around 1785/1790) and his wife Mary Francis. Mary Francis is said to be either Indian or of Indian descent. I have a story provided by the Families in British India society that she had a child with Nicholas but due to not being Christian she was forced to live outside the fort. There are also stories in my family about having some connection to Spain (as well as having Indian blood).

I have tried many times to find information about Nicholas Smith and Mary Francis but so far have drawn a blank. I have looked on IGI and there is a Mary Ann Francisco born 1790 and baptised in 1809. This I feel, may be the correct Mary for several reasons; Nicholas and Mary have a child in 1811 called Jane Smith, it may be the case she was baptised so she could form a relationship with someone from the western countries? In addition Mary's fathers name is Francisco which would explain the Spanish connection.

I also came across a Nicholas Schmidt who was part of the Dutch East India company who would have fit the birth date of Nicholas Smith.

Of course this is just speculation and any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Norfolk / Noah shalders 1770
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am trying to find out about Noah shalders born 1770 in Norwich. He was christened in the swedeborgian church. He married Elizabeth bloy. I have hit a brick wall with him. Igi does not bring anything up at all. Potentially he is the brother of a Thomas shalders born 1777 who's son moved to new Zealand. Also I there is a Jacob shalders in Norfolk but Noah is not mentioned as one of his children. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also there are stories that the shalders could be of continental/ Dutch extract as many settled in Norwich as skilled craftsmen. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you

Derbyshire / Re: Mosse family of Derbyshire
« on: Friday 12 October 12 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi Spendlove,

It's the Derbyshire Record Office sorry for not being more exact!

It's here: http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/applications/dserve/dserve.exe?dsqServer=V-AP02&dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Overview.tcl&dsqSearch=((text)='GLOVER')

And the passage itself is:

Release and quitclaim by Moses Mosse of Shenton (Co. Leicester) glover to Joseph Mosse of Lullington (his eldest brother) of all right etc. in a toft or croft in Lullington with a barn thereon and in one acre one rood of arable in Netherseal purchased by Thomas Mosse (father of Moses) from Daniel Prowdman (4 Jun 1609), and in half an acre and one rood also in Netherseal on Waterfall Heath Leas in Farr Field purchased by Thomas from Henry Baker of Appleby Parva yeoman (4 Jun 1609)
