Many thanks to Valda and Trisha for trying to sort this out.
1841 census - I havn't found the entry for William , a cooper and Harriet - the only Wm. I found with Harriet is a bricklayer.
1861 cen., William Charles is age 12 so could be son of mary ann. (1851 cen showing him older I think is wrong.)
I'm not sure how Ellen Harris married to Moses Reading fits in unless she is sister of Eliza Harris, but I can't find any census entry showing them together.
Eliza was still alive in 1875 as William married her in Stepney then (assuming it is the same Eliza Georgina Harris).
I agree Mary Jane Ralph is the mary jane wade widow - the 1901 cen shows a Charlotte Ralph b.1925 as the aunt of Janes husband, but it is actually Jane's aunt(her father william's sister Charlotte who married a William Ralph).Presumably mary Jane is Charlotte and William Ralph's daughter.
Are you sure it was Mary Ann Johns that William married - I have found marriages listed to several other Mary Anns(Mayall, Creecy and Jackson) around that time?
I can't find any evidence of a Mary Ann being born in Brecon.
I agree, it does sound like Jane was estranged from her father when she married so may have got his name wrong. On the other hand I have found a record of a William Wade being sentenced to 10 yrs. on the convict ship 'Merchantman' - maybe either Jane or he was ashamed and gave a false name! He wasn't a witness at Janes wedding,it was her brother and a Mary Ann Wilkins(?her married sister).
I don't think the 1871 census under the name of Wales is correct because I found the same family listed in 1861 when we have a definite sighting of William's family somewher else.
This means that he is unaccounted for between the 1861 and 1881 census so it could have been him imprisoned.
Anyway many thanks again - I am less confused on some points now!
regards Colleen
