The Stay Safe Board / Re: Diary summary week ending 8th February 2026
« on: Monday 02 February 26 23:35 GMT (UK)  »
Well it was a public holiday today here. And it didn't rain in Dublin today!! We've had so much rain and dull, grey skies lately. I'm really missing the sun. Whatever happened to cold, bright days? There was quite a bit of flooding in parts of the city and around the country in the last few days too. I'm longing to do some gardening, but the ground is saturated at the moment, and more rain is forecast this week.
I completely forgot about University Challenge and Only Connect tonight, I was only reminded of them when I read Viktoria's post a few minutes ago.

The Lighter Side / Re: Researching Family History Can Be So Tragic
« on: Sunday 04 January 26 22:45 GMT (UK)  »
In one branch, I have a couple who had 9 children. I've found 8 of them, I suspect the missing child was probably a premature birth which was never registered.

The couple lost 2 children in 1875, one aged 2 years, the other aged 6 months. In 1878 they lost a 2 month old baby. The eldest, a girl, died of rheumatic fever in 1889 aged 18. But their worst year was 1887.  That year started off with the loss of a 3 year old boy in January, followed by the death of another boy in March. That was quickly followed by the death of the father, John, in April at the age of 46. Finally, in August, another girl, aged 8, died. The mother lived until 1919, the remaining son living into the 1920s.

I honestly don't know how they, or others, coped with so much loss.

I'd like to wish all on Rootschat a very happy New Year. I don't often post here, but love reading all the posts.

Best wishes from Dublin

Am in the cancelling stage atm. Will let you all know in a couple of days how the next stage goes (and whether I needed a VPN this year). Fingers crossed.

You shouldn't need a VPN dublin1850, I'm in Dublin also and haven't needed to use one for a number of years.

The Common Room / How do I download English wills?
« on: Friday 28 November 25 22:23 GMT (UK)  »
I ordered some English wills while the price was still £1.50 each. I've been notified that 2 of them are now ready for download, but I can't figure out how to do so. Can any of you nice Rootschatters tell me how to download them.

Many thanks

I've just renewed my worldwide subscription for yet another year using Sandra's link. No hassle at all. Thanks Sandra. I'm so glad it still works  :) :)

Well, in the latest update my 2% Iceland has vanished. I've gained 2% Wales, and have also somehow got 3% Netherlands. A 1c1r who had a Dutch grandfather shows 0% Netherlands!

Even as late as 1910, many births were never registered at all. As Wexflyer says, it was sufficient to show a baptismal cert if the person was a Catholic.
