Census and Resource Discussion / A gap on the census page - query
« on: Monday 15 November 10 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
Exciting news:  I think I have found the exact house where my ancestors lived in 1860

Bad news:  I'm only 60% certain.

As the census taker did not list house numbers, I am only left to guess which house is the the one where my family lived and worked in 1860.  The census taker first wrote down the inhabitants of High Street then turned onto Wolverhampton Street (in Dudley).  As you can see, there is a blank area next to the first 'Wolverhampton Street' on the census.  Would they have counted this building?  No.1 is listed on the previous page, so I am assuming this is for No.2.  Incidentally, No.2 Wolverhampton Street is a pub which I believe has been there since before this census was taken.  Would they have listed a pub as uninhabited?  Hm.  I would appreciate any assistance with this.

Many thanks,

Cassandra

Hello,

I am currently researching my ancestors that lived in Dudley in the 1850s and 1860s. They moved to the states in 1867. With the assistance of some very helpful people here, I've tracked them down as living on Wolverhampton Street in 1861. Incidentally, I walked down that very street today, trying to figure out which building they lived in.
There is a mystery name on the census: Elizth Green, daughter, age 5 in 1861. There is no mention of her on the passenger list or in any further census. I assume she died in the 1860sbut am having difficulties finding that information. Any pointers?
Thank you
Cassandra

Hello Cath,

Oooh, so is that what the tiny 'h' up to the right means...that it's an abbreviation.  Is it obvious I'm still a bit new to this.

As ever, all suggestions, pointers, anything are welcome,

Cassandra

Thanks KGerrard

I have had a look at their website and have sent an email.  Apparently, someone has written a book on the history of the Framework Knitters.  I shall make that mine very soon.

Again, you have been a tremendous help.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Oh man, what are the men in my family going to say to this?!  Joseph made hose.  And eventually became a farmer in Nebraska.  What a huge leap in career.

I am working on a huge project (part funded if you can believe it when you consider all the cuts that are going on, but anyway) ...and it was very necessary that I got that job correct.

Now I know what to research....

Thanks again,

Cassandra

PS.  I should have logged onto Rootschat over a year ago when I was starting my research.  Your expertise has been wonderful.

Hello to the two that have answered,

You are right!  You are both right!  I have been hunting for ages, trying to find the family.  And there he was all along, hiding under the name of Josh and not Joseph.  I was also thrown by the mention of an additional daughter (one that has not been in my research for later years).  Eliza must have died quite young as she did not travel to the states with her family in 1867.  She isn't listed on the passenger list, anyway.

Thank you so very very much.  I really had hit a block.

All this information has been tremendously useful.  I am actually going to Dudley soon to visit the places where the family walked/lived as part of a massive art tour I am planning for 2011.

Thanks again,

Cassandra

Worcestershire / Dudley, Joseph Green 1861

Hello  ::)

I am currently researching my ancestor's move to Dudley in the late 1850's, early 1860's.  I have tracied Joseph and Maria Green living on Wolverhampton Street in 1864 (thanks to their son's birth cert) but can't seem to find the couple in 1861.  Although I have looked at the census for that year, I am not finding anything.

Joseph was a Hosier ?? (master) at the time.

Many thanks,

Cassandra

Hello everyone,

I am currently a bit stumped.  In my ancestor's birth cert, it lists Edward's father as being something.  And he was a 'master' at it.  They lived in Dudley in 1860's so I was trying to guess in accordance with the industry at that place during that time period.  Joseph was a farm labourer in his youth.

What does Joseph's accupation look like to you?

Occupation Interests / Ancestry occupation listed as 'Hooter'
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 22:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
This is my first question and boy it's a doozy... What is a 'hooter' as occupation? My ancestor is listed on his son's birth certificate as being a 'hooter' in 1854. They lived in Dudley so I am assuming this has something to do with mining.

Thanks
