James McKnight born, 1892, was a son of Jacob McKnight and Annie Hughes.

James married Jean Vint Payce, although she used the maiden name of her mother, Jean Blyth.

They had 9 children, the youngest of them being Isobel Blyth McKnight who did indeed marry James Cousins.

I'm aware of this family, but can't find a connection between this James, and my James.

My James had a son with Mary Bell.

I have researched your family.  I'm aware that they lived in the Laurieston / Gorbals area.  I know Jane Neilson was buried in the Southern Necropolis.

I believe James died as a result of an accident at a mill in Lanark.

I know someone who believes that my James McKnight is the man who married Mary Neilson, and had a previous relationship with Mary Bell.  However there is no evidence, although it remains a possibility.

Yes Mark,

Very accurate information.  James and Jessie (Lachlan) are my great great grandparents.

Jessie Lachlan was living with Mary Bell at Boghall, Moffat in 1841.  Mary was 25 and Jessie 14.  There was also a child at that address, John McGregor aged 4 months.

So it looks like my gg grandmother and ggg grandmother were staying in the same house.

Mark,

The names I have for 80 Eastgate are from the 1861 Census :

Alexander McKnight 51 Labourer
Janet (wife) 51
Peter (son) 18 Saddler (app)
John (son) 16

I believe this family will be related to my ancestors.

It is James McKnight and Mary Bell I'm looking for.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is this helpful?

Go to the Virtual Mitchell web site:  http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php

Search "Barnhill Poorhouse" and you'll find a group photo.

It appears to be well after the date you are looking for.  Nevertheless the date given is an estimate.  The superintendent is a Mr Core. Does that tie in with your research?

Thanks for that.

When were the earliest burials in there?

Hi Southpaw

I have an MI booklet for the old Moffat Cemetery unfortunately it doesn't say when the last burial was but if you want me to look someone up let me know

I'm trying to find the burial places of James McKnight and Mary Bell.  They would have been born around 1800.

They had a son, also called James, who married Jessie Lachlan.

I know of the McKnight / Halliday headstone in the Old Cemetery.

This is an attempt to resolve the James McKnight Conundrum, which is posted on this page.

There are two cemeteries in Moffat.  There is the one in the town (the old one), near the Black Bull, and another on the way out of town.

It's the older of the two I'm interested in , at the moment.
