Carolanne,

Would you be kind enough to check a few more names for me?
William Snape 1830-ca. 1862
Caroline Winter 1832-(1881-1891)
William Shaw 1864-(1907?) [son of William Shaw 1828-1866]

Thanks much,
Steve

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: William SNAPE Hanley - collier
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 14:02 GMT (UK)  »
The only death I have found of a William Snape in Staffordshire was prior to the date of the 1861 census which shows the family living in Hanley.
William was born ca. 1829 in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
William Snape and Caroline Phillips were married at St. John, Hanley in Sep qtr 1850. Caroline (the wife) was born in Bradnop ca. 1830.
Their son George was born in Hanley 15 Sep 1853. He was my great grandfather.
A daughter Caroline was born in London Oct qtr 1855 and daughter Sarah was born in Hanley ca. 1860.
Caroline (the mother) married William Shaw ca. 1861-1863. George Snape took the last name of Shaw for the remainder of his life. I suspect that William Snape died ca. 1861-1863 in either Staffordshire or Yorkshire, as Caroline's son William Shaw was born in 1864 in Dodworth, Yorkshire.
That's as much as I know at this time, much of which was learned after my first post. Thanks for your interest and help.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / William SNAPE Hanley - collier
« on: Friday 12 November 10 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
William Snape. Seeking information on the death of William Snape, a Staffordshire collier. In 1861 he was residing in Hanley with his wife Caroline and children George, Caroline and Sarah. Caroline had remarried by 1864 and I suspect that William had died in the mines. The death of a William Snape is registered in Staffordshire, but in the March quarter of 1861, prior to the 1861 census date. Both of his daughters are missing in the 1871 census and they may also have died in/near Hanley. Any help is appreciated.

Carolanne,
I just received the registration of William Shaw's death and he was killed in an explosion at Oaks Colliery on 13 Dec 1866 while attempting to rescue survivors. I don't know why his name was not listed among those killed.
Thanks for checking it out for me.

Carolanne,
Thanks. I have sent off for the death certificate as well as some births and marriages. I only learned about William when I got his son George's marriage certificate. I was hoping that perhaps someone might be able to tie a burial spot to his death. I'll post more once I hear from GRO.

Further to looking for William Shaw. I think my William Shaw may be the one whose death at age 39 was registered in Barnsley in the March quarter of 1867 (GRO vol 9c, page 130). His wife was named Caroline (possibly Sykes) who subsequently  married Thomas Winter (marriage registered in Barnsley June quarter 1869 GRO vol 9c, page 196). William and Caroline had 3 sons: George born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1853 (my great grandfather); William born ca. 1865 in Dodworth; and Allen born ca. 1867 in Dodworth.

Carolanne,
The Coal Mining Resource Center (www.cmhrc.co.uk) lists a William Shaw, unknown age, killed in Barnsley in 1866. Perhaps he was killed in another incident. I don't have an address for the family. I only know his name from his son's marriage certificate - the son was living in Platts Common. Coincidentally, the marriage was witnessed by a George Kenworthy - perhaps one of yours. Thanks for the help.
