Tipperary / Re: Walsh / Kenneally - Thurles / Clonmel areas

Thanks again Annclare.  I wonder if that is indeed the right Ellen.  It's just so hard to know isn't it.  There are so many Kenneallys/Kinallys etc. and Ellens it's a bit mindblowing for a novice like me!  I feel like I'm hitting a dead end as I just don't know who's who...

Hi again,

On the marriage record that I have found for Ellen Kenneally it shows her father as James Kenneally.  Haywood has pointed out to me that there is an Ellen listed as born in Ballyporeen at around the correct date, but with a father named Thomas.

I guess this means one of two things: (a) I have been looking at the wrong Ellen Kenneally, or (b) Ellen's father used two names (James and Thomas).

Ballyporeen does look like it's a very long way from the Thurles area (where the Jeremiah Walsh/Ellen Kenneally marriage I have found in the records took place), so I am now wondering whether I am looking at the wrong Ellen completely or whether it is likely that she was indeed born in Ballyporeen but then for some reason moved up to Thurles area?

I did start another thread on here about people moving around between parishes, and Haywood has kindly pointed out that it would best if I just kept with the one thread so there is no duplication.

Thank you

Tipperary / Moving to different areas/parishes in Tipperary

Hi, I am trying to research my great grandparents, Jeremiah Walsh and Ellen (nee Kenneally).  I have located them on the 1911 census as living in Haywood, Clonmel, where Jeremiah was a farm labourer.  I thought I might have found their marriage record, but the record I have states that the marriage took place in the parish of Thurles, which is some distance from Clonmel, so began to wonder if that was the correct marriage.

I then started to look at Kenneallys in the Thurles area (on the assumption that Ellen must have been from that Parish) but seem to be coming up with records from places like Roscrea, Killea, Mien, Dovea, Bohernarude.  How likely is it that someone baptized at St Mary's in Templemore would have lived in these areas?  Also, how likely is it that somone from the Thurles area would end up moving to Clonmel?  I just can't get my head around it, and I don't want to spend time researching the wrong family line!

Hi Shane and Annclare, thanks for the info.  The 1901 census looks very interesting.  The only thing is that in the census the family is shown as living in Killea, whereas the marriage of Ellen and Jeremiah took place in Thurles district which looks like it is some distance away?  I suppose there could be a good reason for this though not sure.  I haven't actually got the marriage certificate, I just paid 5 euros and looked at the marriage entry on the Irish Family History website, so it doesn;t say which church the marriage was in.  :-\

No it didn't match.  The marriage certificate for Jeremiah and Ellen listed their respective addresses as "Moynard" and "Coolahulla".  The birth certificate for their son John Walsh shows their address as "Dovea".  Both the marriage and the birth were registered in the district of Thurles.

However, as my grandmother (Mary Anne Walsh) was born in Kilkenny, I didn't think it was too unusual about the distance between Thurles district and Clonmel district, as I thought that maybe they had to move around the area to find work perhaps?

Certainly the 1901 census entry for Jeremiah in Moyneard would seem to be a link to the marriage certificate entry which states he lived in "Moynard".  Hmmm...... :-\

Hi Shane and thanks for the very quick reply!

Yes that family you found on the 1911 census does seem to be my family, the daughter "Mary Anne" is actually my grandmother.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate a birth record for Mary Anne, but I managed to find one for her brother John.  That's where I got the mother's name of Ellen Kenneally.  I then found a marriage for an Ellen Kenneally and Jeremiah Walsh in Thurles in 1902.  But there seem to be so many Ellen Kenneallys (or derivatives of that name) and I now am struggling to find her parents.  On the marriage cert it states that her father is James Kenneally, but I can't seem to find one on the Ancestry website that matches up with the info I have.

As for the Walsh side, Jeremiah Walsh's father is listed on the marriage cert as John Walsh, and there are loads of them!!!

Hi there, can anyone help me as I seem to have hit a bit of a dead end.

I am researching my grandmother's family from Tipp.  Her parents were Jeremiah Walsh (b. approx 1876) and Ellen (b. approx 1876).  I have looked at the census and they are showing as a family on the 1911 one.

I am having problems working out Ellen's maiden name and family.  I think she was Ellen Kenneally, but I'm not sure.  I have looked at the birth record for what I think is one of my grandmother's brothers (John Walsh) and his parents were Jeremiah Walsh and Ellen (nee Kenneally).  Jeremiah and Ellen were married in Thurles.  I don't want to be barking up the wrong tree with this one, though, and I don't know how to make sure that the info I have is correct.  Would anyone be kind enough to help or point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.
Vic

This is very interesting.  From my own research I had found that Catherine Annie Gard did indeed marry Thomas Hills after Bessie died, and I saw that Catherine had gone on to have a number of children.  Did you know about her son, Gilbert, who died in the great war?

My great grandmother, Susan Ann Gard, named one of her children "Catherine", and I wondered if this could have been after her sister.

:)  Ooh this is exciting!  A possible relative!

My "line" of ancestry is: William Gard & Jane Gard were the parents of Susan Ann Gard, who in turn was the mother of my maternal grandfather, Henry Snelling.

Which "line" of ancestry are you from?  I know from my research on Ancestry.co.uk that William and Jane had a number of children, so it would be very interesting to know more....

Perhaps you could PM me if you want to chat further about this?
