World War One / Re: RFA Army Book, Sep 1916 - Dec 1917, Feedback Invited!
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 21:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi Ady
I'm not very "up" on medals at all (apart from the usual WW1 sets) Any information you can provide will be very welcome. I do know that Lt Peglar's medals are not in the family and have probably been sold at some point. I have tried to trace the sale but all I came up with were some "coronation medals" which lt Peglar went on to receive in "civvy street" post war.
Kind regards
David

World War One / RFA Army Book, Sep 1916 - Dec 1917, Feedback Invited!

Attached is a transcription of an Army Book belonging to a Sergeant Major of the RFA 1st Battalion written from the autumn of 1916 to the end of 1917.

There are some pages that have been removed and the most interesting sections are likely to be in Part 3. There are a number of places where the writing is indecipherable and these are denoted with ???. I invite anyone who is willing, to fill in the blanks. Most pages are numbered, so please include it in your replies, thanks.

I hope that someone will find the content of interest as it gives a first hand account of WW1 life for the RFA and it makes many references to soldiers, places and battles. It also shows quite graphically how promotion through the ranks can be gained even in the most difficult of circumstances.
Thanks and (hopefully) enjoy.

David

Hi Ady

Thanks for this. I'll upload the transcription in WORD or PDF to both sites to see what comes back. He names a lot of soldiers so I'm sure somebody will find something interesting.

World War One / RFA Army Book Transcription
« on: Monday 04 October 10 20:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have transcribed an army book belonging to a Sergeant Major (later commissioned to Lieutenant of the Royal Field Artillery, 1st battalion, from October 1916 to December 1917. Much is fairly mundane but it’s full of names and some incidents. For instance he was hospitalised and he listed the names of his companions on the ward:
Spent day in Rouen walking C?? ?? my ward in hospital. May be interesting to remember ?? ?? mostly stomach wounds. Here is the list – a cross section of the British Army
Horse, ?? Sum, Supplier
         F Marqueg
Base Hospital    Le Havre   Oct/Nov 1916
B.S.M Pegler         R.F.A
C.Q.N.S Green         R. Fusiliers
Cpl Leon         Ma??
Pte Blitz         A.O.C
Pte Beasley         A.S.C
Gnr Hughes         R. Berks
Cpl Urquhart         R. High/drs (Canadian)
Pte Bouffler         W. Dragoons
Pte Duncan         Black Watch
Gnr Walsh         R.F.A
Pte White         R. Sussex Regt
Pte Burns         Manchesters
Gnr Berry         R.G.A
Gnr Cutler         R.G.A
Pte McFie         Camerons
Some of the handwriting is difficult to decipher (hence the ??). After that lengthy preamble, my question is this:
Is there a place on the Internet (maybe this forum) where I could post the transcription and invite feedback on missing text and would historians find this of interest?
Thanks,
David
