Also, you might want to research Hardwicke's Marriage Act 1753?
More properly known as The Clandestine Marriages Act.

The relevant sentence:
"Those under the age of 21 had to have parental consent if they married by licence; marriages by banns, by contrast, were valid as long as the parent of the minor did not actually forbid the banns."

My tree starts with 7 generations of John, followed by 5 generations of Abraham! :D

I have replied to your PM. ;)

Simon isn't in my tree, but FamilySearch says he married Sarah Pollard on 30th May 1814 at Great Ashfield.
He died 28th December 1859 at Risbridge, Suffolk, England, and is buried a Little Thurlow.
