Armed Forces / Re: what regiment at Crinkle 1821 census ?
« on: Saturday 26 March 11 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks km1971 and t mo for replying.
The census record was obtained from RootIreland.ie.
I'll try and input the 40th of foot and see if it reduces the number of Henry Martins on the Army Service Reccords. Fingers crossed !

Armed Forces / what regiment at Crinkle 1821 census ?
« on: Friday 25 March 11 23:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have a census record of an ancestor at New Barracks, Crinkle, at Birr, Offaly, Ireland. He was a private aged 33yrs ( name Henry Martin). Unfortunately his regiment is not recorded. Is there any way to find out what regiment was stationed in Crinkle when the 1821 census was taken? There are too many Henry Martin's listed on the Britsh Army Service Records to be of help. And I don't have his date or place of birth. Any advice?

Hi BChibs-I haven't identified a William yet but it is possible he was related living so near.William is also a name which crops up regularly in our family eg William Henry.I also wonder if Henry ( my ggg grandfather) moved around quite a bit as he was an agricultural labourer.
I am still researching Henry's siblings in a hope of finding who his father was.
Dennis Patrick may have been a nephew of Henry and a cousin to Frank, Michael,Patrick, Mary and Anne all born between 1824 and 1837. I'll keep him in mind while researching and let you know if I gind anything.
Thanks for getting in touch and hopefully we'll find a connection.

Cyril,
I've managed to find Henry Martin's marriage to Mary Kearns on 28.11.1818 at Kildare RC church. When you get a minute would you have a look at the record for me and see what other information is included? If there was a father for Henry it would mean I could start looking at another generation.
Hope this isn't asking too much.
Regards

Thanks Cyril - do you think there's any chance of finding birth/marriage dates of Henry and these siblings , David John and Patt or am I expecting too much? It would be amazing to go back another generation. I can't find a birth for Henry on Rootireland-maybe his father originated elsewhere?

Cyril,
Many many thanks for taking such a lot of time on this- I am really grateful for all this information! At last a definate date of birth for Francis! And brothers and sisters- that's more than I hoped for.  Do you think the other baptisms mentioned will be Henry's siblings children? I'll have to come back to them when I've done a bit more research on Francis's generation!
Is it strange that Francis joined the army and gave a date of birth seven years later than his real one? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? The men in our family are small in stature so he probably could have got away with saying he was 17yrs 6 months when he was actually 24, but what would be the advantage in that?
Cyril thank you for your offer, which I will accept, once I've had time to process what you've collected and you've had time to rest! My 81year old cousin will be delighted to hear this news- thank you for being such a star !

Hi Cyril, I think Henry was born before that. He was Francis's father. I have 3 conflicting dates of birth for Francis now 1) from his army discharge papers which state he was born in Allan 1834,  2) from his wedding certificate which states he was 29yrs in 1862 ie born 1833 and 3) from his death certificate which states he was 50 years old in 1881 ie born 1831. Shanew147 on this thread says he found a Frank Martin born in 1827 who's father was Henry.  I am more confused than ever and still don't know his mothers name!  I wonder if the Henry you have found could be his brother?
