re Patrick and Maria's Marriage in New York
Stated Brides father was Philip Gaffney, mother was Maggie Groyliegan. Maria’s mother in 1901 census was Margaret. According to family search a Phil Gaffney married a Margaret Gevighigan in the Bawnboy Reg district of Leitrim in 2nd quarter 1884.  Looks likely to be same person possibly wrong spelling of names.
culbaire

Thank you so much culbaire I am pretty certain now it is them. I even found Patricks father died in 1909 making the return to Ireland to look after the farm very plausible. I doubt I would have found them without your help! Thank you again!

Hi,
I have a family record of four brothers going from Londonderry to the US and the eldest of them marrying a girl he would have known at home. They married in Philadelphia and on the death of his father the eldest son and his bride returned home to take over the farm.

Regards

That seems like a perfectly reasonable explaination, plus Patrick was the eldest son. If I find a record of his fathers death after marriage in 1906 and before the 1911 census I think I'll go with that :) Thank you.

Oh I don't suppose you know how I would go about getting hold of that New York marriage record would you?

if Mary Ann was registered a few weeks after her birth it would be indexed under Jan-Mar 1911, although the date of birth could still be Dec 1910..

I wonder if Mary Ann's mother Maria on that census might be a Gaffney ?...  I know the surname was quite common around Cavan & Leitrim

p.s. I just checked SeanRuad and the townland of Drumcroman is in the Registration district of    Bawnboy.. so that birth does seem to match up with the 1911 census

Shane

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all but rather annoyingly 'work' has been getting in the way of my family research!

I think you may have her there Shane. I've looked at the 1901 census and there is a Maria Gaffney living in Cloverhill Leitrim aged 16 so that ties in with the family info

http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Leitrim/Cloverhill/Curraghnawall/1481697/

The one thing that had me flummoxed was not being able to find the marriage record to confirm that Maria McTague was nee Gaffney.

culbaire: When I first read your reply I dismissed it completely, I mean how could a farmer afford to go to New York to be married? They both appear to be living in Ireland in 1901 and 1911. But the information on the marriage record does seem to be a good match. The brides mothers name is Maggie and that ties in the 1901 census. Likewise the grooms father name of Michael matches the 1901 census plus it would explain why I can't find an Irish record. But for the life of me I can't work out how they would have got there ... well that's not true as I know there was a lot of emmigration so I guess I am puzzled by how and why they came back!

Hi Shane,

I'm afraid I don't know where she was born. I have been told that there are Gafneys in her family but my family are light on facts  ;D . I did look on the 1911 census and could only find a Patrick & Mary Ann McTague in Leitrim so I don't know if that is her.

You would have thought I have enough detail on my gran to be able to find her birth certificate but no!

She was married to Charles Vaughan on 15th November 1927 with a stated age of 18. Her father is down as Patrick McTague (farmer) and her address is down as 22 Ashfield Road Ranelagh.

I've been told that her birthday was 18th Dec but even taking that with a pinch of salt I still can't find her birth registered.

Can you? ???

Thanks for the extra information and clarification on the RFR issue :)

This area of history fascinates me as I am a diver and the prospect of diving one of my ancestors wrecks is absolutely thrilling!

A trip to malin head to dive HMS Drake is on the cards methinks :) The Cressy might be a little deep for now but I will let you know should I ever dive it.

I think you are right Peter, Samuel needed to be found :)

The only thing I am not sure of is the comment in the remarks where it says "Not eligible for R&R not having passed for A.B.". Would you know what A.B. stands for?

Regards
Jen

EDIT: Sorry I missed your earlier post, I suppose this means Able Seaman?

PJ you are amazing. It IS him, although I didn't have his exact date of birth I can see from the census that he was a hairdresser before becomming a seaman and hairdresser is down as his occupation on his navy record.

You should take this up professionally :)

I certainly can :)

Samuel Alfred Wilkes (aged 25) was married to Providence Beatrice Beeston (aged 24) on 23rd August 1909 in the parish of Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Thanks in advance  :)
