Hi Allan, I've emailed my details to the Old Mersey Times as you suggested.  What a wonderful site, some areas really made me laugh - wife selling, some of the excuses for bigamy, and crimes.  lol.  Thanks, Suzie. :)

Hi Jean,  I've found it I didn't think of looking in Liverpool for ships/vessels in the 1901 census (as you can tell I'm new to this).  Thanks again, Suzie.

Hi Jean,  that looks really hopeful.  Where did you find it? as his father, another Captain John Davies, died whilst at sea off Ireland.  My family didn't seem to have a lot of luck!!  Thanks, Suzie.

Hi Allan,

I would really appreciate your help as getting to Liverpool would be difficult for me.  My Grt Granddad was Captain John Davies, born in Bagillt in North Wales in 1868.  My mum seems to now think that the ship may have been called the Ellen Rose but we're not certain.

Thanks again, Suzie   ;D

As far as the family story goes, my Grt Granddad died whilst asleep in his bunk (I don't know the name of the ship) in Alexander Dock, Liverpool on 10 November 1903.

I would like to find out the proper story, can anyone recommend a newspaper archieve I should search or should I be looking somewhere else??

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

No I don't think you are misreading the census, I googled it and found the following page

http://members.multimania.co.uk/clydegen/newpage1.html

LANCASHIRE STRAYS IN DURHAM 1881

Lancashire born folk found in Durham
on census night 1881

Your chappie is one of these:
AUDLEY Douglas 1849 Starnel Broom

I tried googling variations of Starnel Broom but can't seem to pin it to any specific area or town!

Sorry.

Hi, I know this continues a post from an age ago but I'm related to the Tattums of Bagillt too.

My Great Grandparents are Captain John Davies and Rebecca Tattum, I know that he died on his ship in Alexander Dock, Liverpool on 10 November 1903, does anyone know any more of this story??

With hopeful thank, Suzie

Wow, I had no idea it was such a big business.  1 restaurant, 8 cafes, a bakery and a creamery.  I read that it was bought out by Unigate in the late 70's - shame.

However, I still don't know anything about the family other than S. Reece & Sons Ltd.    I can see I'm going to have to dig a bit more into the Reece family tree - maybe go sideways rather than back in time but thanks to both of you, it made interesting reading.
