The Common Room / Re: What Country is your research ?
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 19:03 GMT (UK)  »
Most of my research is Scotland, some is England, and a fair amount is South Africa.  I married a South African and that's where I now live.  My husband's forebears came from Scotland mainly, plus one from Ireland, and 2 came from Europe (Prussia and Belgium).  My family is a fair mixture of Scottish and English.  My grandfather, however, worked for Lloyds Register and lived in France for about 18 years.  So the families are fairly widespread and so far I've done no French research.

Europe / Scottish grandfather in France

Our families both originate in Scotland, however several came to South Africa (where I live).  We also have the Military Settlers of 1857 after the Crimean War, and one from Prussia.

On my side of the family, I've recently discovered that my grandfather (Scottish) worked in Bordeaux, Dunkirk and Marseilles, and they lived in France for about 20 years, but I haven't a clue about doing any French research.  It can become expensive, so I tend to try to find free sites.

Any comments appreciated

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Tolmie
« on: Thursday 30 September 10 12:42 BST (UK)  »
I've only very recently discovered that TOLMIE is now another family line for me to follow.  I found several chat messages here, and feel that I may, possibly, have hit the jackpot. (Hope springs eternal).  If I'm correct, then Ann Tolmie - born 1835 - may just be my great great grandmother.  [The line I'm actually following directly is STUART/STEWART.]

My great grandmother was Mary STUART, nee MACDONALD
Her mother was Ann MACDONALD, nee TOLMIE

All I can verify at the moment is that Ann TOLMIE married a John MACDONALD who was a boilermaker,  and Mary was one of their offspring.  I think that Mary would have been born about 1855.  This is information gathered from Mary's Death Certificate.  At the time of Mary's death (1916 in Dundee), both parents, John and Ann, were deceased.

If anyone can shed any light on this it would be marvellous.  Many thanks,  Rosemac
