Matt,

Thank you very much for that information. I had come across some of it but certainly not all that! I will contact the East Sussex office and see if they can provide further details.

Regards,
Mike

Kent / Skeats Tenterden

Hello,
I am researching the Skeats/Skeets name and came across the following reference in
http://www.archive.org/stream/ahistorywealdke03furlgoog/ahistorywealdke03furlgoog_djvu.txt

"The family of James Skeats
for three generations were also influential clothiers, and
carried on business at Westcross, in Tenterden, and
served the office of mayor of that town in 1648, and
on two other occasions. They appear to have been highly
respected. In an old day or waste-book of Mr. Skeats,
still preserved, there are entries from the carriers' ac-
counts, shewing that ho sent to London in 1632, fifty
pieces of cloth ; in 1633, forty-three pieces ; in 1684,
thirty-eight and a half; in 1636, forty pieces; but in
1686 only twenty-six pieces I This waste-book also con-
tains entries of the wages paid, the charges for fulling the
cloth, and the dyeing of the wool ; also for dye, olive oil,
carriage, &c. Other papers connected with this family
afford interesting information respecting the social state
of the Weald at this time, as they were executors to
many of their neighbours."

I would welcome any information on this family as I have been unable to uncover anything more being remote from Kent. Does anyone know where the family papers might be held?

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you. Does anyone know the GLADDA genealogy? My surname is GLADDERS and have them back to early 1600s. Soetimes they are recorded as GLADDA and the similarity between the two names does suggest a possible connection but I have not managed one!

Any help appreciated!

Regards,
Mike

Hi,

I have come across a reference to a Robert Gladda of St Clements, Sandwich malster, apparently marrying Sarah Knott but no date! Can anyone help with this please?

To help with dates the same document fragment mentions a Robert Gladda os Sandwich, also a malster  being involved with something at St Mildred's Canterbury  on 26 January 1645

Thanks in anticipation!
Mike

If any one could find a burial record for Mary Skeats (nee Wheeler) I would be very appreciative. Equally so with any entry for the marriage in 1776 of Highmore Skeats and Elizabeth Whiteheart which showed Highmore to be a widower.

I believe that the bondsman John Skeat was Hoghmore's father.

I am coming to the conclusion that the 1841 baptism date is an error! From here I only have access to the IGI through www.familysearch.org. Searching for Highmore Skeats throws up a few entries. Two of these are for his marriage to Elizabeth Whiteheart and show his birth as about 1741. Another two entries also show the same marriage but without any suggestions as to his birthdate.

It seems clear that he married Elizabeth Whiteheart and Sophia Willoughby as all three of them are buried at Rockbourne and his age at death suggest a birth in 1729. He was baptised in 1728.

Regards,
Mike

Hi,

Just a thought:

What makes you think that Highmore may have married Mary Wheeler (in 1751) prior to marrying Elizabeth Whiteheart? If it was true then it would resolve quite a few of my uncertainties! I do know he was a widower when he married Sophia Willoughby after Elizabeth's death but I have no real details onnthe marriage to Mary Wheeler.

Any help appreciated!

Regards,
Mike

Thanks for the reply. On top of the Highmore -Mary Wheeler family you mention I have been given the following not all of which I can validate. There may have been at least four Highmore Skeats. Two were well known organists known as Highmore the younger and Highmore the elder:

Highmore 1 (1729-1799) married Elizabeth Whiteheart in the 1750s. In 1757 Highmore 2 (the elder) was born. There was also a daughter Maria who married a John Jeboult. (I am notsure if it wasn't the Maria from Mary Wheeler who married John Jeboult as the age looks a slightly better fit.
Highmore married a Sophia Willoughby. There is a will of a Highmore Skeats leaving his estate to daughter Maria, son Highmore 2 and wife Sophia. Apparently Highmore 1, and his two wives are buried in a vault at Rockbourne.

Highmore 2 (the elder) (1757-1831) married Elizabeth Pigott in 1786 and they had Highmore 3 (the younger). They had a son Highmore 3 and a daughter Elizabeth Whiteheart (who died as a teenager in Canterbury). Apparently Highmore 2 and his wife and daughter are buried in St Martins church,Canterbury.

Highmore 3 (786-1835) (the younger) apparently married Ann Ball in 1814 and they had a daughter Harriet inthe sdame year. Harriett went on to marry (Sir) George Elvey. There was also a Highmore 4 who was stillborn.

Maybe someone will have further infrmation.

Hi,

Can someone shed some light on the marriage of Highmore Skeats and Mary mentioned here. I have been unable to trace any details.  In fact there were several Highmore Skeats and I am having difficulty separating them, their marriages and their offspring.

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards,
Mike
