Thank you so much, that all makes sense and fits everything else. 'Struck' and 'forewarned' do seem to fit given the context.

And Nicholson... it's so obvious now you suggest it and I've spent a while looking at that and not seeing it! It's especially interesting because it now sounds like he might have been an ally; I'd got the sense he might not be.

If I can ask about one last word, after that first section when Harrison assaults Braithwaite it describes how Swythenbank came running around something. It looks like it begins with M but I'm at a loss to as to what it is. the context made me think horses because it looks like he then 'looses' something, but that doesn't appear to fit the word to me.

The second section is preceded by the robbery itself and them threatening him not to tell anyone about it - they know his usual route and would "kill him at any time &.."

If anyone has any ideas what Richard's last name is (it looks like Nirolphons???!?) I'd be grateful because that's also a bit of a mystery!!

Hi everyone, I've recently acquired a scan of a legal testimony from 1661 given by someone who alleged they had been the victim of a robbery in the Yorkshire Dales. I have translated much of it but a few small sections are still causing me trouble so I'm hoping someone might be able to help. I'm having to post them separately due to the file size though.

James Braithwaite is alleging he's been robbed by John Harrison and James Swythenbank after they stopped to ask him directions to Langstrothdale. The first of these sections is preceded by that request  and "he [JB] said he thought that way:"

Thanks in hope

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Kennedys in Leeds

Hi, I've done a bit of looking at records. Whilst I don't have a definitive answer for you, there are a few things worth thinking about.

Firstly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Wallace Percy turned out to be born in Ireland and his parents put down Leeds on the census, I've seen that done before. On the other hand, if he was born in Leeds and the family was Catholic, it's probably not unheard of that they might not have completed the civil birth registration. I haven't managed to track one down.

But I wondered if you'd considered that 'Etty and Frank' might be short for Elizabeth and Francis. There are an Elizabeth and Francis Kennedy named together in the Quarter Sessions in Leeds in 1879. I haven't managed to make sense of the entry, but if they had committed a crime and were institutionalised, it might explain why they are hard to find on an 1881 census together in Leeds. I haven't yet been able to find an obvious death for a Frank or Francis either, in the Catholic cemetery or elsewhere. If it were possible that might be helpful. And of course Etty might have called her son Frank in tribute to his father, explaining the name change.

My experience of researching Irish families in Leeds is that it is often difficult to find online records despite the generally good coverage in that era. If I think of anything else I will let you know.

Hi there, Wallace Percy Kennedy isn't in the tree I researched, but it does look like there was someone of that name from Leeds who married and settled in Hampshire, if that helps, and that he might have been known as Frank. Is there something in particular you are wanting to discover?

Europe / Re: Austria - marriage

Hi Jorose, thank you for that information!

The records in relation to Bernheardnia I had seen, but you've picked up on something I'd completely overlooked; that Hubert gave the Hull address as being his father's address too in 1940. I hadn't been able to find any indication at all that Rudolf had ever gone to England.

Although to be honest I do wonder whether it might have been a lie on Hubert's part, to avoid any uncomfortable questions about his heritage. It would seem from other things I've since found that he described his father variously as either Belgian or Austrian; certainly he lived in Austria but I have found a possible baptism which, if it was the right one, would make him German, something which Hubert might have wanted to disguise to enable him to travel as widely as he clearly did. I also kind find a death record for Ruldof in England.

It's fascinating that Hubert did travel so much - I've seen a suggestion that he studied or worked in the field of languages so that is possibly why but I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to the story either.

Thanks again 🙂

Hi Svenja,

Thank you so much, that is amazing! I had no idea that Bernhardine had ever had a child. I will certainly look for the marriage record as well and see if there is any further detail.

I know that in 1939 Bernhearnia (or Bernhardine) was living back in England with her sister and that her husband was not with her. Now that I know her husbands name I hope to be able to find some further information about him and their child.

Thank you again

Europe / Austria - marriage
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I am hoping to find the record of a marriage that I think took place in Austria sometime between 1901 and 1939 but I don't know exactly where. I have looked on the metricula site but in order to search that you really need to have an idea of the location / parish where the wedding took place.  I wondered if anyone had any ideas about other sources that might be worth checking. Nothing is coming up on Ancestry.

The bride's name was Bernheardnia Harsley and the groom's surname was Kregeloh (or a variation), but his first name is unknown. The bride was born in England originally.

Any suggestions gratefully received!
