Dorset / Re: Dorset button maker
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching Abraham Case and family re: Dorset Buttons. Can anyone point me in the direction of primary sources for his birth, army service, marriage in 1622, children (allegedly Abraham Junior and Elias, grandson Peter et al! I have tried Ancestry/Parish Records without any clear links. Yet conventional wisdom credits him with marrying a girl from Old Wardour and settling in Shaftesbury to start the Dorset Button industry! Any suggestions?

I am researching the Dorset Button industry, in particular the families who emigrated from Dorset, England, in the mid to late 1800s after the demise of the industry due to the invention of a button making machine. I would appreciate hearing from anyone whose family history leads back to Dorset and involvement in the Dorset button making industry during this period.

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: Belfast Street Directory 1923-26

Found Hugh McDowell labourer living at 6 Weaver Street Belfast 1923-27.
Would anyone recognise the name and/or the address from a family perspective at that time? His death certificate states that he was named James Henry McDowell and that he died 19 March 1927 117 Lisburn Road Belfast which I assume was in hospital.
Where might he have been buried?

Antrim / James Henry McDowell b.1895
« on: Sunday 26 September 10 19:10 BST (UK)  »
Ireland Census 1911 has a John McDowell, occupation carter living in Cultra St. Belfast. In Ireland Census 1901 he was a van driver living in Lilliput St. Belfast.
This coincides with James Henry McDowell's fathers name and occupation at his marriage in Norfolk in 1918. The 1901 Ireland census lists a son Hugh aged 6 but not James Henry. Could he have changed his name for whatever reason? Can any McDowell surname seekers help? I could ask for Hugh's birth certificate if only to rule him out. Are there any members living in Belfast who would be willing to do low-level research in the GR0

Thank you both very much.
I have the Norfolk connection sussed on my Grandmother's side. The family home was in or around Fakenham.
I followed through James McDowell - went on Ancestry and downloaded his pension record. Looked promising. However when I cross-checked with census 1901 and 1911 it transpires that his name is James Edward McDowell. He also appears to have given his age on enlistment as 19 in 1915, two years older than both censuses.
Still a possibility but the the second name is the problem.
