This is fantastic stuff! We have had a family legend about the "changing name" story but I've never actually heard of it being written down somewhere.

I have good news for you - I have heard of Jeremiah Q Flenley, although the Dick Flanaghan part is new and worthy of investigation.

I have found one other Flenley before 1754 - another William, born 1728 in the then-Kingdom of Ireland - and evidence of other Flenleys in Ireland - though quite how this fits with the story of the name change I don't know. Perhaps they are from the Flenleys who went back to Ireland in the 1800s?

Be very keen to exchange trees!

On the Liverpool note there are still many Flenleys there, in fact I'm friends with lots of them (well, Facebook friends!). Are you on Facebook at all?

Matt

Hi! So do I take it that Margaret Magee is the Margaretta who married James Berry?

All, would appreciate any further help on offer!

Recent DNA testing shows Flenley to be related to Flannery in Co Mayo, possibly Castlebar, as either Flannelly or Flannery.

No ideas where to go with this. Any Flannerys/Flannellys out there know of historical Flenley links?

Canada Lookup Request / Re: 'Black' and 'Gushler / Gieschler' family, Ontario

Hallo! Anything I can help with, I will help.

I've made quite a few assumptions but I'm pretty convinced that the Gieschlers married into the Black family. My wife is a Black, and they are from Ireland; I've got information on them arriving in Canada ok, but the problem is that John Black is a pretty common name!

US Lookup Requests / US Revolutionary War - Samll Flenley
« on: Sunday 01 May 11 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Be interested if anyone can help me find more about a 'Samll Flenley', rank Corpl Lt., who apparently appears in Box 36 of the War Rolls, state MA.

I can't access the image of enlistment (or whatever's actually contained in the rolls themselves), but would be delighted if someone can show me anything about who this Samll was (presuming he's Samuel) and from whence he came please.

Thanks!

Matt

PS I've a few other posts in Irish boards but not sure how they relate to this. Personal theory is that Samuel was a relative of William Flenley b.1754 in Dublin, Ire. Not sure how, though! Thanks - Matt

Hi there,

There are a few Henry Flenleys in the tree of which I'm also one part; do you have birth/death date?

I might not be able to help but if I can, I most definitely will!

Good point - hadn't thought that that would be the case! Berry travelled through both sides of the family, and lives on to this day in the middle name of my wife's uncle.

John Black on the Census 1901 has an immigration date of 1880 but it's been transcribed as 1890 - was lucky enough to get a look at it!

James Berry Black appears on the US Census, weirdly, in 1880, staying with an uncle John in Stark, Il. It asks more questions than it answers, to be honest - such as, why only one brother in Il in 1880, and the other elsewhere? - but both appear to be over that side of the Atlantic in 1880, which makes me think I've possibly got the right guys.

Please keep it coming! This is all great stuff!
