Re lindynz comment about having a death cert for David John Loughlin, can you give me the date he died??  Everything I have says he passed in 1904, in Auckland, a transfer from City Missionary to the hospital, under the spelling of L(a)ughlin.  My email algb@charter.net

If you google "Ponui Island, spelling is given as Chamberlain and Chamberlin, and the Island is known as Chamberlin Island

From the Loughlin Family Tree", compiled December 1984, I have that "there are several references to John Loughlin in the log of the cutter "Midnight".  He travelled to Ponui Island on August 9, to begin work for Mr. Chamberlain.  Isabella followed him on August 23, and Sarah on 8 September, 1865".  John's wife, Eliza Jane (nee Adams), arrived in Auckland pn the "Chile", tpgether with children Mary, Agnes, Eliza Jane, Samuel and David on 4 December 1866, and followed John to Ponui Island on 10 December 1866.  In 1869 they moved to the Thames area, and in 1901 settled at Whakatete Bay on the Thames Coast where descendants of John and Eliza still live.
I have a sketch of the homestead somewhere, it is long gone, but I have visited the site.  Descendants do still live there, and there is even a 100 yar old rose bush, named after one of my great aunts. Have photos somewhere.  Agnes Loughlin McCormick was my great grandmother, and there is information on the family available thru The Treasury, online cemetery websites, etc., plus I have "stuff".

My records state "he was the only child of father's second marriage".

David John Loughlin (Laughlin) is one of my ancestors, I am descended thru Agnes.  We always had it that he died at City Missionary, under the name John Laughlin, which could explain why the connection took so long to make.  He born about 1820, Comber, Ireland, m. Eliza Jane Adams.  She was born ABT 9 Oct 1822, Ballyboley, Down, and she died 29 July 1904.  Family historians state David John died "before 1904", but until quite recently he was just "walked away", so possibly they wrote him off.  I do have a rcord from a family member that says "he as the only child of his father's second marriage, but I have never been able to locate his parents, and spent several weeks in Ireland trying to do just that

I do show in my copy of the family tree that John James (Jack) Woods married Mary June Loughlin.  I list six (6) children, plus their descendants.  Names include Tye, Gratton, Kirkam, Wood, Illston and Shepherd, plus descendants born as recently as 1948.  You might want to look on Findagrave for the Tararu and Shortland Cemeteries in Thames.  I recall at least one WOODS buried there and I have other photos taken at my last visit to the Cemetery that I can look for  Loughlins came over in in 1865 or 1866 on either the Southern Cross or the Chile, I do have the appropriate passager lists, they did not all travel together.  Some went first to Ponui Island.  More info if you need it.

My family includes the Adams, McMurray and Loughlin families, and I am descended from David John Loughlin, who did in fact live in or near Tullynakill, and emigrated to NZ.    We have never been able to find wehat happened to him, and I was born and raised in Thames, NZ, until recently someone found a John Laughjlin (note speeling), labourer, who came from City Missionary to the local hospital, where he later died.  His age, religion, and time in NZ all matches.  Was always told that he walked away one day from family in Thames.  City Missionary was a shelter for men, located in Auckland, and they would only have the information that he elected to share with them.  You can probably find death information online somewhere, note the spelling of Laughlin.  I have met and known many other Loughlin descendants over the years, none ever knew or would say where he went.  You can e-mail me at (*)  I think we may have corresponded before??
