Many thanks for replying to my question. We are in the process of applying for my grandad's war record. So will come back to you when we have more information.

Many thanks Ady

I have his service record and it states 19 June 1905 he was RFR and in final column C S expired (I think). But he re-enrolled from 23.4.10 to 12.7.15, so how come he was aboard the Queen Mary in 1916.
Also I have found records of him listed as a patient in a hospital in Castletown, Portland, his occupation being Seaman RM.  Do you know if this was a navy hospital.

Thanks
Sue

Neil

Many thanks for both of those links.  I think a day out for my mum and me to Chatham may be in order.

My great grandfather was listed as Ld. Sea. I'm guessing the Sea is short for seaman but do you know what the Ld. stands for. Also will that tell me what his job was.

Sue

Hi All

My grandad, George Oliver Baldwin, served in Egypt during WW2. All I know is that he lost his hearing because he manned big guns.

Any thoughts before I pay £30 to National Archives, greatly welcomed.

Hi

Yes you're right. I've had the info that he'd married a second time to a Sarah P, but that was all I had. Interestingly I've found Thomas' name with 3 of his children and 2 of his grandchildren in a list of burials at Benson St Helen's church but also on the list was Priscilla d. 1869 and I have no record of her birth. D'you think this could be Sarah as she would have been exactly 60 and I do have Thomas living on his own at the 1871 census?

Regards
