Staffordshire / Hannah Yates, c.1827 - 1898
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 08:11 BST (UK)  »
Hannah Yates was born in James Bridge c. 1829.  Her parents were Benjamin Yates, born 1789 in Cleobury Mortimer, and Ann Baggott, born 1795.
In 1849 she married William Bates with whom she had five (known) children: William, Samuel, Ann, Eli and Louisa. By the 1861 census she was a widow.
In 1863 she married Martin Burke, born c 1828 in Ireland, possibly Galway, with whom she had three children: Edmund James, John Martin and Mary Ann. Martin died in 1882.
We are hoping that one of Hannah's descendants knows something about Martin: where he lived in Ireland, when he came over and if any of his family came with him.  We know from their marriage certificate that his father's name was James, described as a tailor.
The information we seek is the missing link to allow further research in Ireland.
Thankyou.

Galway / Martin Burke, b. 1828, Galway

Martin Burke was born c. 1828 in Galway, Ireland - whether county or specifically town is unknown.  At some unspecified time he went to Staffordshire, England.
On 3 July 1863 he married a widow - Hannah Bates, nee Yates.  On the 1871 census they are living at James Bridge, Stafford with children Edmund James, aged 4, and John M., aged 11 months.  The 1881 census find them at Crab Lane, Cannock, Staffordshire, with a daughter, Mary Ann, aged 7.
Martin died on 28 March 1882 in Cannock, Staffordshire.
This is all the information we have on Martin except for his father's name on his marriage certificate.  His name was James and he was described as a tailor.
It would be wonderful to trace the family back to Ireland but we are aware of the difficulties surrounding any search.  The hope of this posting is that some ancestor in Ireland has a remembrance of family members moving to England that might help us to know where to go from here.
Thankyou.
