Lanarkshire / Re: Lanarkshire Obituaries/Death Notices
« on: Thursday 11 December 14 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Michelle,
Did you ever resolve your obituary notices for Janet Cullen and John McPherson Campbell? I had a look and found both of these, but none of the others. You can search the Glasgow herald for free.

Hi Janice,
Just spotted your enquiry. The C.W.S Funeral parlour was in Morrin St, which ran from Keppochill Rd, crossing Gourlay St and finishing at Cowlairs Rd. The Parlour I beleive is now on the restructured Springburn Rd.Palmarc

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for the input. The Club celebrates it's 150th aniversary next year and I am trying to find a photo of every Past-president as part of the aniversary celebration. There are only 5 that I don't have yet,and Charles Ogilvie is one of three that I am really struggling on.
Regards Allan.

Hi Atom,
If you come across a copy of "Bygone Carluke", published by Stenlake, there is a photo there of Hallcraig House, with a little bit of history also. For more info, you could also contact the Carluke Parish Historical Society in Hamilton St, Carluke, contact Christine Warren.

Lanarkshire / Charles Ogilvie
« on: Sunday 14 April 13 15:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
Can anyone help me find a photograph of Charles Ogilvie for a history project. He was born in Fossoway & Tulibole, Perthshire, one of seven children of James Ogilvie and Jean Baxter. He married Mary Ann Sandiford in Neilston, Renfrew on 22/11/1867. He had moved to Carluke, Lanarkshire and was a Grain merchant. They had 4 children, viz., Ann, (2/6/1868), Jane (9/9/1870), Emma (15/1/1873) and James (26/11/1876). Ann married Colin Park Baird circa 1895, and had 2 children, John & Jessie. Colin died in 1908, and last trace I have of Ann is 1911 Cencus, living in Renfrew. Cannot find Jane after 1910 cencus in Carluke. Emma died aged 2 in Carluke in 1875 and have no trace of James after 1903. Charles died at daughter Annie house in Renfrew in 1902. Charles was a Past-President of Carluke Bowling Club, hence trying to find a photo.

Lanarkshire / Re: Drill Hall Carluke - Edmonstone
« on: Friday 12 April 13 14:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rachel, I know its a couple of years since you posted this thread, but I have just found it and hear is some info that may or may not be of use to you. I found this whilst trawling my way through the intimations in the Carluke Gazette from 1906. Sometimes the newspaper published an obituary or just a detail of the deceased.
DEATH OF SERGEANT JOHN EDMONSTONE: Sergeant John Edmonstone, Drill Instructor, passed away somewhat suddenly, at his residence, Drill Hall, on Friday evening last week. Deceased, who was 41 years of age, was a native of Cockenzie, Fife. Twenty two years ago, he enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry and served with his regiment in the insurection at Cresta. Something like 8 years ago, Sergeant Edmonstone came from the depot in Hamilton to set as Drill Instructor to the Law Company of Volounteers and his work gave satisfaction to all concerned. A little over 2 years ago he was appointed Drill Instructor to "D" (Carluke) Company, 8th H.L.I., in which capacity he has since served. His illness only lasted for a few days and terminated totally on Friday as stated.
The remains of Sergeant Edmonstone were interred in Wilton Cemetery on Monday with military honours. The military party accompanying the cortege numbered over 200 and consisted of Territorials, Imperial Yeomanry and a party of Sergeants from the depot at Hamilton. The officers present were Adjutant Stevenson, Major Anderson, Captain Hunter, Captain Gibb and Lieutenant Gray. The coffin which was covered with many beautiful wreaths was carried to the grave by a party of Sergeants.
A short religious service was conducted by the Rev. F.M. Hauxwell. The parting salute was fired over the grave and the bugles sounded the Last Post. Deceased was of a genial nature and very popular with those he associated with. He leaves a widow and family.
I also came accross this death in October, 1918. EDMONSTONE: At Shotts Sanitorium, on 17th inst., Millicent Kate Edmonstone, daughter of the late Colour Sergeant John Edmonstone, Carluke, in her 18th year. This would put her born circa 1900 and I just wondered if she could have been your missing Margaret.
Hope this is of some use to you. If I come across any other Edmonstone info, I'll be in touch, but it may be some time yet.

Hi Arthur,
Just some thoughts on the obituary of Janet Gold. If Natalie had married, I would have thought her married name would have been shown similar to Effie's, so possibly safe to assume, Natalie never married. If Janet was grandmother of Maureen and Maurice, surely they were Effie's children? Since there is no mention of Janet ( Andrew and Heather's daughter), was she born after 1946? Also, if Janet was Great grandmother to Helen, Helen must be the daughter of either Maureen or Maurice. Would be interesting to find out where Archie McDougall died. Could Effie and Natalie have gone to Australia after their father died, to be near their mother?
   Be in touch again.

Hi there,
Been busy for the last few weeks on another part of my research, so didn't notice your posting. Glad to here that Andrew Gold is still alive in England. Difficult to trace living relatives. Do you have contact with him? I am desperate for a better photo of Nathaniel than the one I have, so if you have contact, could you try for a photo for me?
On to Nathaniel. I don't know how much you have picked up from the threads before mine, but here's what I have:-
Nathaniel's Grandfather Andrew married Isabella Morton, dates unknown. They had a son, Andrew, d.o.b. unknown, but died 11/11/1898.
He married Catherine Miller Oman in Edinburgh in June 1866.
They had 6 children, viz., Andrew, b:1867, d:1899 in Gibralter. Nathaniel Daniel Isaac Oman, b: 22/7/1868, Linlithgow, d: 12/5/1940 in Sydney, Australia. Isabella Miller Morton, b: 1870, d: 1878 in Carluke. George James, b;1871, d: 1875 in Carluke, John Miller Morton, b: 1873, d: 1895 in Carluke. David Just, b:26/2/1875, Carluke, d:1958 in Shotts.
Nathaniel married Janet Black 12/7/1894 and they had 3 children. Andrew, b: 5/7/1898 in Carluke, d: 11/8/1953 in Sydney, Australia. Euphemia MacPherson, b: 1896 and Natalie Oman, b: 13/12/1907.
Brother David Just married Eliza McMillan in Glasgow in 1897 and thay had 1 son, John Miller Morton, b: 1898.
David later married Grace Marshall Pettigrew in 1918 in Glasgow and they had the 4 children you already know about.
Previuos threads by Goldenplomb will confirm Nathaniel's son Andrew married Heather Jean Pym Pennant in 1927 in Australia.
I assume that his parents went to Australia to be close to their son and for the wedding as they travelled in time for it.
Hope this helps. Will be in touch when I organise the photo of the house. Keep watching the threads as there may be more news on Nathaniel's 2 daughters.
 Allan
