Rose was my grandmother's sister.  I have a photograph of her marriage in 1931.  If any relations are interested please reply.

The Common Room / Buying Wages

Hi
I have this quote from a document:

Thomas Pratt, William Blackmur, Shipwrights, Sheerness. They bought the wages of Thomas Pritten and George Olive Sr., Caulkers, for one shilling in the pound. The men left without being properly discharged and were marked as Run. They ask for the Runs to be removed so that they may be reimbursed.

What is menat by 'buying wages' - and also I assume Run means leaving without authority but not sure

Thanks in advance

Sussex / Re: information pre 1841 census and old workhouse buxted

Found it!!!!
I too have ancestors who lived in the Old Workhouse.  On and off have been trying to locate it for several years - there are just no references on the internet.
By studying 1851 to 1871 censuses narrowed it down to somewhere on Pound Green Lane.  After this it disappeared.
Found it as "Workhouse Farm" on "theweald.org".  http://theweald.org/m00.asp?PicIdto=35055004
Original map is on the National Library of Scotland site (brilliant for maps) c1875 6inch
https://maps.nls.uk/view/102347623
If you have used the NLS site before this map is not on their georeferenced section.  The earliest 6inch map there is c 1895 and by then it had been demolished - hence the difficulty of finding it

Hope this is useful to a few people ;D ;D ;D

Sussex / Re: Lost in Hastings WOOD's

Adding to reply #5 concerning Frances in 1861.
I have checked the 1851 census for any Fanny Wood and have found none - so this makes it more probable that Fanny is Frances.

By the way in both 1851 and 1861 the WOOD family shared their address with other families - on both occasions two of the wives were sisters of Sarah WOOD (nee SPICE).

In 1851 Mary Ann Mann (nee SPICE) and Elizabeth COBBY (nee SPICE)
In 1861 Elizabeth COBBY again and Lisa (really Eliza) STACE (nee SPICE)

My records from a transcript of St Clements show that William Wood MARRIED Sarah Spice on 19th August 1844.

As it is not a direct ancestor I haven't yet searched the BAPTISMS but it seems a co-incidence that the date of Frances' baptism is the same.

Northumberland / Phesbo - ship

The ship sank in 1860 with 2 of my ancestors, from North Shields on board.

Any information on this boat would be welcome.

Thanks for the information.  Have found the name spelt COWPER before, but hadn't thought of it this time.  I'll investigate this line with interest.
