FH Documents and Artefacts / Re: Does anyone know what this jar is for?
« on: Friday 21 March 14 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother had one of these jars, it was indeed used for butter and was put on the tables at mealtimes , no butter dish. She also had another ,but I can't remember what it was use for, but vaguely think it was used for dripping.

Can anyone tell me the location or assist with the records for the above . My wife's grand father , Edwin Mills, was there in 1881, when he was aged 14. What I want to know is how long he was there and the reason why especially as he was from Hammersmith. At the moment I believe he was orphaned when he was around 1/2 yrs and in 1871 was living with a cousin

Ireland / Re: Breakout from Kilkenny Jail
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 10:06 BST (UK)  »
Sorry for not answering all the replies, but have not been around much and things have been put on hold. It now transpires, from a distant cousin, that they may not have been part of this 'break out' but of an earlier one where they obtained some guards uniforms(?) or similar and walked out. More work to do but thanks for all your info, it has been very interesting.
As an aside, following a recent visit to Clonmel I have been able to obtain my dads Birth Cert, he was told his birth had never been registered and he always had to rely on his Baptismal Cert( which was incorrect )and this caused no end of problems. It took a lot of work in the records office and a very diligent  lady noticed an error in the records  which led to the discovery and has turned up a name nobody has ever heard of.

World War One / Lieut. Col. Percy MACLEAR
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 14:28 GMT (UK)  »
1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers atached to the 2nd Nigeria Regiment
Died 30th August 1914 , Garua, Nigeria

As part of my research of London Irish rugby players who died in the Great War,I have the above person on whom I have a lot of information, but one thing puzzles me. I know he died in a Geman counter attack and Garua was not retaken until June 1915, when a funeral service was held over the graves of the men who had fallen the previous August. I have been trying to find the location of these graves but to date cannot. Has anyone any idea, how I can find these or know of their existance.
All I have is that Percy is commemorated on the Lokoja Memorial.

World War One / Re: Military Hospital Tipperary
« on: Wednesday 21 December 11 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
There was a small Military Hospital  in Clonmel during WW1, it was situated behind Kickham Barracks, which was used for wounded of the Irish regiments. Beleive there may have been another  in Tipperary town.
