Yeah I know that ;)
I meant the family lineage origins not the "name" perse.
Do you have anything? Where do you fit in?

Hi Jo
Unfortunately, I got no further insight on John Knight. I'm desperately interested in how the name "Knight" came to be. Were they actual nobility at some point in time, or simply associated via adopting the surname under a "Knighted" baron etc??

So here we go again.
I hired a researcher to investigate the true Anthony Knight.
The following are common assumptions:
Anthony Knight (son of Jas. & Blanch) married Mary Hore 1793 (Roche)
(d) Elizabeth 1794/5
(s) Anthony 1798
(d) Dorothy 1800
(s) John 1803
Mary Hore dies in May 1803
Anthony(widower) remarries a Elizabeth Grose in Jun 1805
they produce 8 children

2nd Anthony Knight (son of Joseph & Elizb.) marries Mary Sincock in Jun 1802
 (s) William 1805
(s) Benjamin 1809
(s) Joseph 1810
(d) Mary Ann 1813
(s) James 1815

Discrepancy is that there are no baptismals to Mary Knight (Sincock).
Who's to say that Mary Knight (Hore) died in 1803???
Isn't it very possible that Mary nee Sincock died in 1803 and that Anthony and Mary nee Hore survived to produce ALL 9 children.
In saying this Elizabeth nee Grose married the 2nd widower Anthony.

the 1st Anthony was illiterate,
whereas the 2nd wasn't, and signed both the 1802 and 1805 Marriage certs.

Upon further scrutiny the Witness to marriage 1805 was a John Thomas, the same John Thomas who married a Jane Sincock in 1770, perhaps a coincidence, who knows.

In summation,
I believe Anthony and Mary Hore endured 9 children.
2nd Anthony married Mary Sincock then Elizabeth Grose

Cornwall / John KNIGHT 1645 (Cornwall)

I descend from John Knight 1645-1699 born in Roche, Cornwall.
John married a Jane ?
His father was William and Katherine Knight.
My query is that I have read many other peoples family trees and they all say that John was the son of Richard Knight who married Agnes Coffley/Sarah Rogers.
If Richard moved to America in 1635 with Agnes and subquently had other children there why is it that John is born in Roche, Cornwall, UK.
There are too many descrepencies, notably that Richard marries 3 times in the states and all wives were still alive when he married the next. Was Richard a mormon?
Anyone out there who shares the same frustration?

Cheers for the info,

I already have most of the info, its just that when I try to look back further in other peoples trees they tend to mistake the Anthony Knight/Sincock, for Anthony Knight/Hore/grose.
Goldie61 thanks for the link.

There seems to be 2 Anthony Knights (b.1773-1855) both of which marry a Mary in this time frame.
I'm searching for the Anthony Knight who married Mary Sincock in Roche, Cornwall.
I descend from Anthony(1773-1855) his son James(1815-1883) his son Henry(1854-1910). Henry emigrated to Australia.

Hello Daree,

I live in Coffs Harbour.
Henry and Maria lived in Nana Glen (was Nana Creek) and were were buried in Coramba. Consequently a good majority of their descendants are buried their also.
I only know about Christopher marrying Mary, but as for him dying in S.Africa I had no idea. I guess that is why Henry named his third son William Christopher.
Henry and Maria had 4 surviving children. Edwin John Henry 1889(my G great grandfather), Sidney George 1893, William Christopher 1895, and Irene 1899. Irene did live here also. In fact both William and Irene married into the Sharpe family.
Basically the Knights with the Sharpes continued to mine for Gold in the Orara Valley behind Coffs.
Love to know what you have Daree. my email is

Actually,

Before Henry Knight moved back to Australia from South Africa, he actually went back to Polperro Cornwall and ran the Ship Inn. He left for Oz in 1904.

G'day Daree,

Christopher Knight, was my great, great grandfathers' Henry Knight's little brother.
Henry was born 1854 in Polperro, Cornwall and Christopher was born Feb 17 1857.
I too have struggled to find info this far back. I do know that Henry came to Australia (possibly with Christopher) in the 1870's.
He is rumoured to have gold mined in north Queensland. Henry married in 1882 to a Maria King and they sailed to South Africa and lived there from 1889 to 1896. They had all their children there, and consequently moved back to Australia (Coffs Harbour region).
I have Henrys Family Bible with all his siblings date of births, and I also have his bank account book.
Dearly love to know more about his English background, notably Christopher.
