Hi, I'm the original poster... My great great grandfather is Harvey Thomson (1854-1924; the butcher), and one of his daughters, Antoinette Ellen Thomson (1893-1973) , is my great grandmother.
It literally gives me goosebumps that you have his diary - how amazing to see his penmanship!

Hi J.J.,
Thanks so much for that link - i had not seen it. Like you, I decided to give the Thomson family a bit of a rest for a while... researching from NZ takes a bit of time (and funds) so any little bit of information is fantastic. I started researching the family a couple of years ago - until then our branch of the Thomson family had simply 'vanished' from Scotland - little did anyone know that they had made a new life for themselves in New Zealand. Three generations of 'Harvey Thomson' also proved a bit challenging - still looking for more info on them first two Harveys - the are interesting characters!
Thanks again!

Hi Jim,

Both really! I only know that Lillian married and came out to Australia. I do not know anything at all about the other BENNETT family members.

Warwickshire / BENNETT family of Birmingham - marble masons
« on: Tuesday 19 July 11 10:04 BST (UK)  »
Good evening all,

I am seeking information on George Henry BENNETT, born circa. 1860, of Latimer Street in Birmingham. He was a stone and marble mason and married to Sarah (whose maiden name MAY have been Marten/Martin). Children were Albert, Alice, Alfred, George, Sarah, Lillian and Frederick. This information I have gleaned from a marriage certificate of his daughter Lillian, and the 1891 and 1901 census. A stepson named John BETTS (born circa. 1875) is also listed on the 1891 census, employed as a brass worker.

I would love to learn more about the family, so any information will be greatly appreciated. My family knows nothing of the history, and I would really like to find out some more details for them.

Thanks,

Catherine

Hello Andrew,

Thank you for that information. Since my last post I was able to order the death cert. of Harvey THOMSON - up until that time he seemed to have just disappeared from New Zealand. Do you know anything of his life in Australia or why he chose to go there after New Zealand. I would love to know more about the family  and the son that went to Australia (please feel free to PM me with info.). Harvey THOMSON (1825-1888) seems to be quite an interesting character - living in Shanghai after his wife's death while his children stayed in Scotland, then coming to NZ before going to Melbourne. Do you have any more details about his life in China or Australia?

Catherine

Hello Althea and Lu,

Thanks for the info. Yes, I am lucky - the family is said to have been quite prominent in Wanganui, so I am hoping there is some more information out there. I will contact the museum - I'm in Auckland, but hopefully a trip down there will be on the cards at some time.  Antoinette Ellen THOMSON, Frederick's wife, was my great great aunt, so I'm also hoping to find some more details on the THOMSON family of South Taranaki (I posted some queries a little while ago about them). Harvey THOMSON is a name I am particularly interested in - he was a clerk of the Resident's Magistrate Court in Wanganui.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Frederick Ireson JONES

Hello all,

I am seeking information (and hopefully descendants) of Frederick Ireson JONES of Wanganui who married Antoinette Ellen THOMSON. I have some information about the family gleaned from the usual internet websites (BDM, Paperspast) and information from a book on the early settlers of Wanganui by James Garland Woon in which Frederick’s father, Henry Ireson JONES is mentioned. Frederick and Antoinette's children include Harvey Ireson (born 1886), Riena (born 1883), Irelle (born 1885) and Antoinette Ellen (born 1895). Frederick was a dealer in old and rare books, and he had a brother, A. W. Jones.  I would love to find out some more information, or even someone who is researching the same family…

Hi John,

Yes - good idea, I will contact Invercargill. HT the clerk was charged with embezzlement in 1871 and acquitted on the 7 May 1872, so that would narrow down the options. Perhaps there are three Harvey Thomsons in NZ at that time!

The date of arrival in NZ was estimated from Harvey Thomson Jnr's death certificate - and we all know how reliable those details can be! His sisters' death certificates give an arrival date of 1869, so there is a little variation there - although I suppose they could have come out on different ships. I am yet to find their entry into NZ. I am dealing with a son and a father of the same name - with the father being the clerk and the son being the butcher/Eltham councillor... fun stuff! It's still possible that HT the clerk is not related - when I could find some info about his death it might help to confirm or deny this.
