Suffolk Lookup Requests / 1861 census please, Orford Street Ipswich
« on: Friday 21 March 25 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Requesting some assistance please in finding John Hawkins in 1861.

From a newspaper:  he died 18 August 1863, in his 75th year; of 3 Orford street, St. Matthew's Ipswich.

I wondered if searching by that address might lead to him, but I'm not finding him so far.

I think that death record matches to the John Hawkins I have in 1841 & 51.
John & Letitia Hawkins - in St. Mary at the Tower, Ipswich.
John was born in Colchester, Essex approx 1787.

Many thanks,
Charlotte

Kildare / Brownstown place name question
« on: Sunday 22 September 24 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have some written details, passed down through family.

A birthplace is listed as Brownstown, Co Kildare.  The birth was registered in Naas.

Then it says:  Born district Kikeilleri.

I'm curious as to what that part means please?
I've tried googling that word, with some guesses at spelling variations, but with no luck.

Thank you for any ideas.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1871 census address search please

Hi,
Thank you all for your ideas, and it sparked some new thoughts and new routes for searching.

From the entry Kay99 provided, I went to the Campbell & Dunn family, then clicked through each nearby census page.  I did the full section, 41 pages.

With each new street name, I checked on the maps from MollyC and followed the enumerator's path.  From Bookbox:  the National Archives site lists RG 10/3789 for Constance Street.  The 41 pages match that number, so I think that means Constance Street wouldn't appear elsewhere.

The addresses listed are written as follows:
Constance St. Ct. 1 No.1
do do No. 2
do do No. 3
do do No. 4

Constance St. Ct. 4 No. 1; 2; 3; 4
Constance St. Ct. 6 No. 1; 2; 3; 4

So, four house numbers within each Court.
My people are in Court 2, and the census shows Court 1, 4, 6.

Yet, the maps do not have a Court 1.  Also, page 1 has the enumerator's summary, and it mentions Court 2, 4 & 6.  I also had a little hunt in 1881, and couldn't find a Court 1.
So, if there's no Court 1, then maybe those households should all be Court 2.

Back to the Campbell & Dunn family, and just below them is an unusual entry.
No. 3 is marked as Uninhabited --- written in the Name section: Occupied on the 4th Inst.

1871 Census: Sunday April 2nd.  It's quite possible they were the people who moved in and occupied it just days later.

Thank you again to everyone for your searching!  Yes, they are the Cockburn - Larkin family, as Tickettyboo listed above.  We've been missing them just in 1871, with all manner of searching variations attempted.

It was interesting to learn about the Courts and sort of tour around the neighbourhood in the maps!  Liverpool isn't one of my main areas of research, so that was fun to learn more.

Thank you all!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1871 census address search please
« on: Monday 10 June 24 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I would like some help in searching just by address please, for the 1871 census.

2 Court Constance Street, Liverpool

Robert & Elizabeth Cockburn had a baby at that address in late May of 1871.  I've searched every which way for them without luck, so I wondered if searching only by address would lead to a discovery.

I don't know for sure if they'd moved to Liverpool yet, but the census is very close to the birth in May.

Many thanks,
Charlotte

Thank you all so much for your insight!

That's good information to know, and will be helpful for future subscription decisions -- hopefully for others too, who come across these messages.

Thanks again, much appreciated.
Have a good day,

The Common Room / British Newspaper Archive subscription question
« on: Monday 03 June 24 22:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've subscribed to FindmyPast before, but not to the British Newspaper Archive.

The BNA is affiliated with FindmyPast.  I'm wondering if everything in the BNA is available through FindmyPast?

It seems like it would be...  I just wanted to verify, in case there's a chance the BNA is a larger or different collection.

Many thanks,
Charlotte

Devon / Re: St. David's, Exeter - location question
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 21:53 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all very much for your insight and good ideas.  I'm not at all local to Devon, so it's very helpful!

Since posting, I've now got him in the 1921 census, and he hadn't moved to Exeter yet.  Not a railway employee, but he was in London - so I guess he arrived on that mainline at St. David's station!
It seems that he wasn't in Devon for long, so that's why I was curious about his address.

Thank you kindly.  The ideas and maps are very useful for his wife's side too.  We have several generations going back in that area.

Thanks again!

Devon / St. David's, Exeter - location question
« on: Thursday 25 January 24 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a marriage certificate from the 1920s.  In the 'Residence at time of Marriage' column, his says:  St. David's, Exeter.

Is that most likely referring to the area within Exeter?  The section to the east of the River Exe.

It seems there's usually more info, with a street name and house name or number.   The bride's address does include a house name.

Online maps show a street, St. David's Hill, or there's St. David's church or train station!  I'm guessing it's the area though, and unfortunately his address is just a little vague?

Thanks for any ideas,
Charlotte

Hi,
I just looked up some relatives and that page includes mostly black ink, but additions in green ink, red, a pale blue, and regular blue ink.  The pale blue looks unusual - and your pink ink would be too.

My guess would be that the inks may have faded or changed over time?  They added details such as married names at various dates, so different pens would be around.
Maybe they wanted those later additions to stand out, with colours used.
