Mmm, there are an awful lot of Gillies!  I finally found my Kate Ann Gillies - she was illegitimate so her birth is registered under her mother's name, the census gives her father's name, her marriage certificate gives both and she is variously known through all of them as Kate, Ann, Annie or Kate Ann.  All v confusing!

Would you like the certificate?

Hi - There is an area of Tewkesbury known as Mitton. The second sample looks like Midden Road to me.  Possibly it's changed spelling over the years?

Fabulous. So not an armaments factory then?  Wonder if the difference is due to WW2 censorship or misremembered family lore.  I'll be seeing William's son later so will give him the article and see whether his mother told him anything else.

Thanks again.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Grave of William Adam Harkness
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the burial place of William Adam Harkness.

Born 26 March 1898, Ballinware, Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland.
Died 29 September 1943, Bournemouth.

Son of Henry Edward Harkness and Isabella Adam. Husband of Maud Mee.

He was living in Stewart Road, Bournemouth and working in a bomb factory at the time of his death. The funeral was held in Bournemouth but we don't know where his remains are interred and would love to know.

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance,

KK

Thankyou so much. I've just looked at the docs you sent privately and am really pleased.  ;D  I'll repay your kindness and do my bit for other Rootschatters whenever I am able.

Jacquie and susano

You are brilliant :) .  I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking in Canadian records.

Jacquie - There was a little confusion over which ones had emigrated so looks like the family got one right and one wrong. (Although no sign of a mink farm - maybe that really is a figment of the imagination!!)

I would say Duncan is definitely correct - Rankin is a family name so less room for error.

Robert is a more common name of course but the dates match up so it's probably right.

susano - If you don't mind looking up those registrations for me, that would be really kind of you and I would be very grateful.

Thankyou both - you're brill! KK

Hello Iain - So pleased to (virtually) meet you!  I had traced the marriages and deaths of all the 5 sisters and knew about their children from census info and IGI. Obviously I knew a lot about Catherine's (Katie's) children and grandchildren and have recently been finding out a lot about Maggie's children and grandchildren.  However, I had not had opportunity to research very much on Isabella's, Mary's or Annie's children so I am absolutely delighted that you found this thread and responded!

I'll send you a PM, to let you know where to find my family tree and tell you about a newly-found cousin, if you don't know him already.

Best Wishes

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / COMPLETED (THANKYOU!): Robert and Colin MacLean
« on: Friday 08 October 10 23:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me to find Robert and Colin MacLean.  They are brothers and their parents were Peter MacLean and Margaret Matheson.  Both were born in Kilbrandon, Argyllshire, Scotland.

Robert was born in about 1888 and Colin in about 1894. Their date(s) of emigration is/are unknown.

We believe that one of the brothers came back for a visit after WW1 and, on his return, contracted Appendicitis on the boat and died before he reached Canada.

One of the brothers is believed to have owned a mink farm in Nova Scotia.

I know this is sketchy info but I'm hoping someone can help or at least give me an idea of where to look!

Many thanks in advance,

KK
