Armed Forces / Re: Boer war Ancestor?
« on: Monday 02 July 12 16:04 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather Hartley Shackleton joined the 3rd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment as a private in 1897. This was a Militia regiment. He was "Embodied" from 1900 to 1902 and served in South Africa. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa and the King's South Africa 1901 - 2 medals. He left the militia in 1903 after his marriage and just before the birth of my father.

He joined the 4th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment before the declaration of war in 1914. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front.

Any information on the East Lancashire's in South Africa would be appreciated.

I can say quite categorically that Christopher Shackleton in question is not related to the famous Sir Ernest. His roots go back to the Todmorden area in the late 18th century.

He was married (to Ivy) but she predeceased him.
He had 5 children but I am not in touch with them. The children were Derek (b 1933), Brenda (b 1934) Audrey & Ivy (twins) (b 1935) and Brian (b 1941).

My uncle, Christopher Shackleton (1907-98) was born in Burnley. He served in WW11 possibly at Alalamein. I lost touch with him in the 1950s. He does not seem to be recorded on the Burnley Honour Roll web site. Can anyone help with information please?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1st East Lancs Regiment
« on: Friday 27 August 10 15:46 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with info on the following WW! soldier who served in the 1st East Lancs Regiment.:
Hartley Shackleton 1878 - 1955. Born Todmorden.

I believe he joined the 1st East Lancs in July 1914 with Service No. 11805. His medal Card shows he was at Gallipoli from 14-6-1915.

His Army Records seem to be among the many lost ones but there may be something in the East Lamcashire Regiment archive.

Could someone lookup the WO363 and WO364 War Office Pension Series for his record please.

Thanks for your replies. Very helpful. I will follow them up.

Hartley Shackleton was born in the June quarter of 1878 in Todmorden (Yorkshire/Lancashire). His address in the WW1 period is possibly 30 Lutner Street Burnley (at least that is the address at which his wife Mary Catherine died at in 1916) or 11 Royle Street Burnley (which is the address that is given on the Burnley Roll of Honour for men who served in WW1).

The Medal Card has the Labour Corps entered below the !st East Lancs entry but no date is given for the change.

The Theatre of War and Date of Entry therein has been written over. The uppert entry is for Theatre 2B (Gallipoli) with a date of 14-6-15. The overwritten entry is hard to see but I think it is Theater 3 (Egypt) and the Date is ?-7-14.
