Devon / Information & Record Archives for Mary Tavy Orphanage & Devonport Orphanage
« on: Wednesday 28 October 15 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Listers
We understand at the outbreak of WW2 the Royal Devonport Dockyard Orphanage was relocated to Mary Tavy Orphanage. We are trying to locate information back to 1911-1918 in order to discover when a great uncle (George Holman) was admitted and when he left.
Our current enquiries have not been successful in terms of records and where they are held as the building was sold and now have been replaced by private buildings.
We have tried the Plymouth & Devon record office and the Dockyard Heritage Centre with no success.
Any help or advice would be welcomed
Thank you

thank you - I have checked the Plymouth and West Devon Record office and you are right upon outbreak of the Second World war the orphanage moved out of the city to Mary Tavy and their premises were purchased by Plymouth City Council and cnverted into 'guest houses for old people'. They have since been converted into private apartments. I wonder whether Plymouth City Council may hold any records before this as I've drawn a blank so far?

The Common Room / Re: *HMS Lion -- Ernest Oliver Roberts **

thank you --- Ernest's father Joseph was described as a blacksmith and shipwright - presumably as ships were moving from sail to steam at this time so needed to add iron working skills alongside carpentry?

Dear Listers

I'm trying to understand more about a great grandfather who was a shipwright in Devonport Plymouth in the 1800s.

I believe he served on  HMS Lion around 1885.

Is there a way to find out more about this ship and if possible Ernest's naval record.

His father was also a shiwright and blacksmith in the Plymouth Dockyard and I'm trying to find out more about what life was like back then

Any ideas appreciated

Thanks

The Common Room / Tracing Cornish ancestors in mid 1700s

Dear Listers

I'm trying to trace John Roberts & Ann Roberts (nee Dungey)

Believe that they married in 12.10.1779 in Mawgan in Pydar near Newquay I believe

I think I have found that Ann was baptised 2.2.1752 @ St Wenn but cannot trace anything about when John was born or when he died.

I have asked a very helpful OPC in Cornwall for some guidance but any thoughts or help would be appreciated

Thank you
