Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Polly and Patty PRIOR WOODSTOCK
« on: Wednesday 30 November 22 15:56 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you so much. So it seems we are cousins three times removed (?). My understanding was that Kate died near Barnes in London as her and her husband Samuel Johnson had moved there. My father said he visited them there as a boy for holidays and he said he last saw her as a widow in 1943 when he was stationed in St. John's Wood before going to Rhodessia to do his pilot flight training in the RAF. I thought I'd found her death in FreeBMD that seemed to match her. I haven't subscribed to Ancestry yet so haven't delved further. I have joined Oxfordshire Family History and would like to go back to Woodstock to learn more about this fascinating side of the family.

Hello. Interested you're looking at this strand of Priors. My paternal Great Grandmother was Kate Constance Prior  b.1872 daughter of Joseph and Harriet. She met my Great Grandfather Samuel Johnson, a Coldstream Guard whilst a nanny in Kensington. He was from Sheffield and that is where they married and settled and had a family. I am from Sheffield but love in London. I haven't started to seriously trace my family yet but would be very happy to do so whilst helping or being helped by distant cousins. All the best, Richard.

Hi

I'm descended from Kate Constance Prior (b. 11/7/1871), Woodstock. She was a housemaid in Paddington when she met her husband Samuel Johnson.

See: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/3815175/TRAVELL for more information on the Priors.

I live in Whitechapel but am from Sheffield originally.

Richard

Hi
This link will give youwhat you want: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/3815175/TRAVELL

Francis Loder Prior [Senior] & [Junior] are mentioned on Page 6 and 7.

My Great Grandmother is Kate Constance Prior (born 11/7/1871) daugther of James Prior (born 1841) who looks like she was descended from [Senior].
She married Samuel Johnson in Sheffield in 1891.... hence me. They met whilst she was walking a baby in Kensington Palace Gardens (she worked as a housemaid at 44, Leinster Gardens, Paddington), he was in the Coldstream Guards. She told my father a story of having her pigtails pulled in church by an annoying Winston Churchill, 3 years her junior. She also said that the Prior family were landowners but had it taken away when the Duke of Marlborough was given Blenheim following his victories. There is some mention of Marlborough buying a farm from Thomas Prior in:  http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=1324 (just do a Find On Page 'Prior').
I hope this helps. Richard

Hi

That's definitely her. Do you mean Leinster Gardens Paddington (as there is no Leicester Gardens)? I used to live near there. This fits because my father told me that Samuel Johnson (his grandfather) and Kate met whilst she was pushing a a pram in Kensington Gardens. Samuel was in the Coldstream Guards I'm told and may have been guarding the palace.

They married in Sheffield in 1891(!) I suspect that they had to run away for the usual reasons (!) but latterly they lived in 9 Putney Park Road near Barnes which I visited with my father a couple of years ago - he had spent a lot of time as a child with them. He last saw her in 1942 before he went off to South Africa for flight training.

A story that came through is that a) the family had owned land which was taken away from them by the Marlborough's and b) Winston Churchill used to pull her pigtails in church (presumably St. Martin's at Bladon) - he was 3 years younger so one can imagine an annoying kid doing that!!

I visited Woodstock about 25 years ago when I did a conference in Blenheim Palace and stayed at The Bear but had no idea I had family connections there at that time.

Re: James Prior - there are definitely 2 born in 1841. One married Harriott Hemmings the other married either Sarah or Frances Laughton. I am going to visit the Public Records Office in the next couple of weeks to get the relevant certificates.

Check out this reference: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=1324 (do a find on Prior)

I am very keen to find out about this branch of the family and to meet any long-lost relatives and help their quest too where I can. My email address is: (*).

All the very best

Richard

Hello

I'm Richard Johnson and my great grandmother was Kate Prior born in Woodstock in 1871. I believe her father was James Prior but based on your research that I've followed I believe she was the daughter of the other James Prior (both were born in 1841) so I suspect they were cousins. I am only just starting on the journey to trace my ancestors. I live in London so have the public records office 5 minutes from where I work and I intend to visit Woodstock to do more research. If I can help fill any gaps I would be more than happy to help - by the looks of it we are distant cousins!

Best regards
