Wicklow / Re: Stump of the Castle?

Hi,

I have been doing a bit of digging for you, in 1901, there were only three houses in stump of the castle. my house was built around that time so is not listed. None of the families that lived there were Kavanagh's or Doyle's. However, in 1911, there was 7 houses, with the 4th (next to mine) having a family name of Doyle. All these houses would have been labourers houses beside a forest. most, except 1 have since been renovated. Doyle is a common name in the area, but there is every reason that they would have been related. Good luck with the search

Hi,

Stump of the castle is just, what we call a "townland" and currently has only 10 houses in it. some of these 3/4 of these are only recently built (last 20 years or so). The townland gets its name from the ruin of a castle which is in the vicinity and has a historical connection to other castles in Wicklow

I don't know if you have looked at the national archives census returns for 1901 and 1911, it gives details of every house and their occupants.

Do you mind if I ask what your great grand parants surname was?

by the way, this area is now on Google street view, so you can have a look.
