Great idea ... my people were Framework Knitters from Asfordby, Leicestershire - would be great to connect with others who's families were in the area and working the same trade. Other groups you might also consider were the Nailers (Nail Making Trade) in Birmingham which was a huge industry in the 19th century. Some of my ancestors were Nail Makers and Blacksmiths also.

Cheers, Simon.

And Hi to all with FWK families,

would a "Special Interests" database be any help ??

Thanks for the welcome Bob ... I think your suggestion of a special interests zone is a great idea given the traffic here. I also meant to add that my LARGE family members eventually moved to Aston Birmingham by the 1870's where the household trade turned to Blacksmithing. The other side of the family - (CLARKE, WHITTLE) - who were originally from Mountsorrell/Barrow Upon Soar, moved to Rowley Regis where the males were engaged in Stone Cutting/Squaring and the women in that famous trade of NAIL MAKING. What amazing and tough lives they lived!

Best, Simon.

Greetings all!

Wonderful thread I stumbled upon looking for more information on Framework Knitters since both my 3rd Great Grandfather and 4th Great Grandfather as well as my 4th Great Grandmother were all Framework Knitters in the 1841 and 1851 census records for Asfordby, Leicestershire in the Melton District. Asfordby is not far from Barrow either which seemed to be a hub for Framework Knitters, but I noticed a strange entry in the 1851 Census next to my 4th Grt Grandmothers name. The men were listed as Framework Knitters while her entry just said Frame Lab? I'm not sure what the second word was, it may have been an abbreviation I could not read properly ... it looked like Lab which I assumed was Labour? Does anyone have any idea on this term 'Frame lab?'.

In any case I would love to talk to others who have a history and tradition of Framework Knitting in their family lines in the Leicestershire region. I need to go back and read this thread in its entirety also ... am I to understand there is a book about Framework Knitters also?  8)

P.S My FWK ancestors surname is 'LARGE' ... for those with genealogy in mind.

Cheers, Simon.

AVM,

I know very little about the other family members since once James White died, the family lost touch with his siblings. I know some scant details about his brother Bill ( William ) White - who lived in Holborn London ... he was involved in selling Newspapers on Fleet Street. I know that Bill was an elder brother ... I two street locations where he lived in Holborn, but not the house numbers ... I know Bills wifes name and his daughters name. I have no specific dates for Bill however.

Any use?

 AVM,

In conversations with my father he states that it may be possible he was born in Ireland if his mother was Irish ... and that he grew up in earshot of Bow Bells ... this is another possibility at this point. Is there a FreeBDM that includes Ireland?

Best.

AVM,

Wow ... ok, I had not understood that in the past ... I thought I was getting direct hits for the exact DOB - not registration dates.

Thanks to all who have replied here ...  :)

I have seen the Lovelock and Jones names before but the problem was the births for those are in December rather than early November ... I had tried the FREEBMD before and it won't give ant results for the month of November which is quite frustrating. My next resort is to try and order his birth cert ... I am not sure if there will be any parental information on the marriage cert since he was apparently orphaned about the age of 4 and raised by his older siblings.

I was hoping somebody might have access to data that might give me a clue on his parents before I make an order on the birth cert ...any help is deeply appreciated.

Best, T

G'day all,

I have tried every angle I can think of but I am stuck ... can somebody please help crack this mystery. I need a birth look up on my Grandfather ... I have his DOB but not the exact location or his mothers maiden name or his fathers first name. We know he was a London Cockney and claimed to grow up within Bow Bells ... there is also information that his mother was Irish ... he was also Catholic.

If anybody can help me narrow it down I would be eternally grateful ...

James White b 1st November 1924, London.
Spouse = Phyllis Rose East b 1922
Married Oct 1944, Maldon Essex
Died - April 1963, Colchester Essex.

His siblings were - William, John, Charlie/Charles, Rose - he lost his parents at a very young age.

I can't do any further research on my Grandfather without knowing his Mothers first and second names or his fathers first name ... please help.

Best regards, T.
