Thanks Alan. Following this information I have now found other material to confirm that Edward was indeed the father of my John.
The only information that I have about John Senior is second or third hand and is as follows. He came over from Ireland to work on the Newtons' farm in Poldhurst Court near Harbledown in Kent. Why he should come all that way is a mystery. When his master died John married his widow Margaret. Apparently John left a will signed in 1733. He died on 4.11.1733 and probate was granted in 1740 (!) at the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury. I have not yet been able to check this will.
The hearsay in http://www.austenfamily.org/sankey.html is interesting. The reference to King John is found in http://www.localhistories.org/liverpool.html
